Jarrod Robinson speaking on Galatians 3 at the 2014 Pepperdine Bible Lectures Tramadol 50mg — part of the theme, “Enter the Water, Come to the Table.”
from → General
Mike, I’ve never been to the Pepperdine Bible Lectures, and I couldn’t attend this year because, well, I live in West Africa. So I thank you for posting these links so that I can still be challenged by this proclamation of God’s Word. Thank you!
In 1969, when I was 14 years old, I remember asking my daddy why ‘girls’ couldn’t do the same things in ‘church’ as the boys did. As he was daddy to three daughters, (I’m daughter #2) & being wise & already a champion of women, he said to me—& I’ve never forgotten—”Andee Lea, there’s a day coming when girls & women will get to do what boys & men do now in The LORD’s church, & I hope to witness it before I die, & I hope you get to do the same. In the meantime, just know God loves you, & Mama & I do, too.” Daddy was a teacher at Harding, & always took up for the women faculty & staff, & said they should get equal pay for equal work. Daddy is my hero for ALWAYS seeking God & studying The Word, & I believe he would’ve given Jarrod Robinson a standing O for preaching this Truth, as he always did for you (Mike), Rick Atchley, & many others. And before he got Alzheimers, he heard me rave about Sara Barton, & would’ve been so proud to know she is a preacher of The Word, too…
I decided to highlight that part of Jarrod’s starting place in his lecture misreads some of the archaeological evidence from Roman Asia. I will suggest that it is crucial that we better understand the background to Paul’s teaching as it reveals that apostolic teaching in 1 Corinthians 11 and 14 and 1 Timothy 2-3 was as “counter-cultural” in the first century as it is in our time in an equal rights culture.
Also, I hope that all of us hold onto a commitment to 1 Timothy 2-3 with the same commitment we hold to Galatians 3:26-28. Rendering 1 Timothy 2-3 as “occasional only” does not accurately represent the background to the teaching.
Glad to discuss with you and others. Up front I will point people to a study entitled Deceiving Winds which documents the background information here for people to take a look at.
