The ACU Bus Accident
It’s been a sleepless night, praying for my student, my four former students, and the other ACU students and faculty members who were in an accident yesterday as they headed on a ministry trip to Medina Children’s Home.

For us, it’s eerily familiar: one vehicle accident, rollover, people scattered beside the highway, one dead and others injured (with injuries ranging from minor to critical), families being alerted, hospitals filling, prayers being offered.
It was the same road that a couple hundred Highland people (including our son who’s been in the 2005 wreck) were traveling yesterday afternoon, heading to the Highland family retreat at the HEB encampment a Leakey, TX. He called saying that he was stuck in traffic on highway 83 with sirens all around and helicopters landing. It gave him a perspective on what many people observed while he lay injured in the ditch a few years back.
Please pray for the family of Anabel Reid, for those who are injured, and for the ACU community.
(Thanks to Hannah Vickers for this photo, taken from last night’s prayer vigil on the campus.)
Thank you for these words. I’m sure that sleeplessness has been a common theme for the whole Abilene Christian University community.
MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY OF THE STUDENT KILLED AND THE ENTIRE ACU FAMILY…..
Prayers for all involved, for full recoveries. Anabel was an Ag major so she could go on agricultural-related mission trips, and she died on a mission trip. I don’t understand.
My granddaughter, Jaymee Myller, sent me a message about the crash last night. We are praying for the family of the deceased young woman and all the students and facility on board the bus. It’s a sad reminder of how fragile life is.
My heart hurts for the ACU community. Praying.
Anabel Reid was in the 5th grade when I did my student teaching at her school. I remember her as a sweet, funny, vibrant young lady who could always make you laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
My thoughts & prayers are with the whole ACU community as you grieve the loss of Miss Reid, & wait to hear the condition of the rest of the injured.
My heart’s prayers have been constant – Mercy, LORD. Comfort, LORD. And in Your time, LORD Healing. May we find comfort in the absolute certainty that You above all others, know what and when is the time for every moment of life’s joys and yes, the tragedies such as this horrific bus accident. LORD, also comfort for those that this brings back their own tragedies, I pray for them also, in particular the Bourland family but also the Copes, Childers, Bennetts and everyone else that has had to face the loss or a near loss of a child. In Your precious name, Amen!! \o/
praying…praying…
Thinking of you, Mike, and of all the ACU family.
May our always loving and merciful God bless you and keep you.
The pain of the past seems to forever work its way into the present. Praying for all….
Greetings! I haven’t seen you since you were in Kenya, and it has been long since I looked at your blog. Thanks for your writings. I am saddened to know about the ACU wreck and loss. I enjoyed your coffee conversion. I have been drinking it all my life – and I like it black and strong. Last time in the Dallas area, Darlene and I spent half an hour almost every morning at the local Starbucks (our daughter now lives in Southlake, so that is our “base” in the USA). I enjoy the Java House coffee in Nairobi. Darlene’s favorite is the nonfat caffe latte at Starbucks. I will drink coffee any way and enjoy the multiple tastes, whether the “cardboard” at the chain restaurants or the gourmet places.
We will miss Jerry but are glad it is you taking his place. He has taken great efforts to make a place at the lectures for African leaders, which we have appreciated greatly. There is a man at Nairobi Great Commission School named Tom Opondo who is hoping to come to USA and promote preacher training in Africa as well as agricultural efforts among African preachers. Please consider him and NGCS for the program in 2013.
