So THAT Is How a Seatbelt Works
Wonderful line from American Eagle flight attendant tonight:
“I need everyone’s attention, ladies and gentlemen—especially those of you who haven’t seen the inside of an automobile since 1962. Because I’m going to show you how to operate a seatbelt.”

And a great description of Aunt Fanny in Wendell Berry’s A Place on Earth:
“She seems to give a respectful credence to the statement that God is love, only to hurry on to explore with real interest the possibility that God is wrath. She can read from the Book of Revelation with a ringing of conviction in her voice that can make the Creation seem only a stage-setting for the triumphant thunderation of the End.”
We were landing in Chicago a couple of years ago when the flight attendant announced, “Because we don’t want any passengers to arrive at the gate ahead of the aircraft, please remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop.”
“In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting theirs. If you are traveling with more than one small child…pick your favorite.”
