Skyping in Person

2011 March 29
by Mike

As a grandparent who’s separated by 1342 miles from his granddaughters, I’m so thankful for Skype, iPhone FaceTime, YouTube, digital photos, and video-imbedded text messages.

As of this summer, Skype will be replaced by presence. Matt will finish his residency at Duke, and they are moving to Abilene. Hurrah!

Has anyone else been listening to Gregg Allman’s Low Country Blues? I’ve been listening to that same whiskey-voiced sound most of my life; and it’s still amazing!

How wonderful! Skyping in person sounds that much better!

There is NO replacing a grandparent in a kid’s life. It will be great all the way around. Thankful for all of you!

I know not Greg Allman. May have to look into him…

Our son, daughter-in-law and 4-year old grandson are 1,711 miles (East Boston, MA) from us, and we Skype often. This week, they are here in Abilene!! I’ll take face-to-face any day!!

Sarah, please tell me you are not a native Southerner.

    Affectionately,

Great news about Matt! We just started Skype since our teen is homeschooled these days. Skype is great for him to stay close with friends and family so far away. Hey, been listening to the new Allman album. Love “Rolling Stone” and “Just Another Rider” the best. He still sounds the same! Have to admit, I like to go from blues to some uptempo EW&F like “Let’s Groove” right afterwards!

BTW, John Fogerty is touring the south this year…

Sarah – Stay tuned for Allman Brothers primer. Mel – Thanks for the Fogerty alert. Will google the tour dates.

I’ve been listening to the new Gregg Allman album, too, particularly the track “I Believe I’ll Go Back Home.” Kinda neat, isn’t it, to hear allusions to the Prodigal Son coming from the same guy who sang “Whipping Post” and “Statesboro Blues.” I’ve noticed that the soundtrack of your life resembles mine. Might that have something to do with daily exposure to the NHS cafeteria P.A. system?

Wasn’t aware of GA’s latest — thanks. I see that T-Bone Burnett produced it, too! Interesting. Recommend a track or two to download to get started?

The Allmans’ “One Way Out” remains in heavy rotation on my iPod. Dicky Betts and Duane A. dueling on those guitars is a gift for the ages.

Kim – You nailed it. My musical taste was piped into my soul through the Neosho High cafeteria. I’ve tried to hang onto the Allman Brothers while expunging Jim Croce, but it doesn’t work.

Whenever I hear “Ramblin Man” . . . or “Time in a Bottle” . . . or Dylan’s “Mr. Bojangles” . . . or Loggins and Messina’s “Your Mama Don’t Dance” (appropriate for you and me—two guys from the Assemblies of God and Churches of Christ!) . . . or Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American Band” . . . well, I’m back in there with fish sticks on Friday!

Matt – Start with “Floating Bridge,” “Just Another Rider,” and (as Kim said) “I Believe I’ll Go Back Home.”

How great to have your son and his family moving “home.”

As your boy leaves North Carolina, ours heads out there to Cherry Point, his first duty station as a United States Marine.

    Enjoy those grand daughters.

Thrilling news!! It seems to settle one unsettling question I’ve had on my mind, “Will the Copes stay in Abilene?” YAY!!
And it’s a sure bet we’ll see you a bit more too. Another resounding, YAY!! :)

First and above any personal glee, I’m so very pleased for you and Diane – and for Chris – big bro. coming home!! Yet another YAY!! :)
