A God Slur
“If we see somebody behaving pompously and arrogantly, we sometimes say, ‘He thinks he’s God Almighty.’ But that’s a gross slur on God. Christianity focusses on a young Jew telling stories about the kingdom of God, healing the sick, confronting the powerful, dying under the weight of the world’s pain, and rising again having defeated death itself; and Christianity says: ‘That’s what it means to be God.’
“So, when somebody asks me, ‘Was Jesus God?’ I usually turn the question around. ‘Is it true that the living God was uniquely and personally present in Jesus?’”
- N. T. Wright
Great quote – what book is it from?
Laura – It’s from The Original Jesus: The Life and Mission of a Revolutionary, pp. 84f.
That Tom Wright has it going on. I heard him overview the book of Acts in one hour at the National Pastors Convention a few years ago and he rocked.
Love that quote—hope I can remember it the next time that concept is being discussed. And, I love the artwork! Who is the artist?
IOW – there are more than one way to take God’s name in vain.
Mike – I’ve been remiss in thanking you for bringing the Bishop to my awareness. It’s easy to see why he has had such an impact on you and others.
Reminds me of an old joke.
“What is the difference between God and a federal judge? God doesn’t think He is a federal judge!”
