Swine Flu . . . Anonymous Comments . . . iPhone Apps . . . God’s Big House
My wife doesn’t have students this week. ALPS classes (gifted and talented) have been cancelled in AISD because they don’t want students from the different elementary schools intermingling. What am I not understanding about the swine flu threat?
I loved the comment by a doctor on The Today Show who said, “Take the goofy masks off. They don’t do anything.”

Can anyone tell me why newspapers require full identification for a letter to the editor but they’ll let people say almost anything in their online comments anonymously? I thought the comments on the Abilene Reporter-News website were bad; but the last couple days I’ve been reading some articles in the Commercial Appeal. Apparently you can say anything there without having your comment pulled — as long as you don’t use profanity.

With over 10,000 iPhone applications, it’s impossible to keep up with what’s out there. So here’s a chance for you iPhone users to tell us about a cool one or two that you’ve been using.
I really like TwitterFon, Showtimes, SportsTap, NYTimes, AroundMe and Keynote Remote.

“This is wonderful news. I do not have to choose between the Sermon on the Mount and the magnolia trees. God can come to me by a still pool on the big island of Hawaii as well as at the altar of the Washington National Cathedral. The House of God stretches from one corner of the universe to the other.” Barbara Brown Taylor, An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith

The news outlets have really gone overboard with this swine flu thing.
The hysteria surrounding this issue has, however, told an interesting tale about the power of mass-media.
I live in Memphis and totally agree with your thoughts on The Commercial Appeal. I often wonder how many of the comments would be posted if real names were used or if you had to say the comment face to face to the person. It’s so easy to hide behind an anonymous name. Truly the worst in people comes out in these comments. How sad they can’t find better ways to spend their time.
Shazam is great. Ocarina. iFog. And for all the c of C worship leaders, there is also a pitch pipe app.
Have you heard about the new swine flu ap for iPhone?

Some of my iPhone apps:

Panic: a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces hysterical or irrational behavior, and that often spreads quickly through a group of persons or animals. (From dictionary.com)
I call it Swine Panic.
They need an App to tell you which apps you should have, or a review app. How about an app for folks like me that don’t have an iphone.
Do you remember the old story of the boy who cried wolf? That’s how I feel about this swine flu hoopla.
As to iPhone apps: Shazam is a favorite for me, too; also Grocery IQ, iTV (I add a movie to my Netflix cue when I’m at the store looking at it rather than trying to remember it until I get home), AllRecipes has a recipe spinner that’s great when I can’t think of what to cook for dinner. And, of course the Amazon.com one gets plenty of use.
30,000 people die of the “regular” flu every year.
Swine flu. Over it. I have closets that need to be cleaned out, though, in case we get quarantined. Either way, I’m good.
I wrote an article about Easter for the ARN and the first comment was a TIRADE (not completely anonymously, but close) about silly traditions for religious holidays (Easter bunny, egg hunts) that the article had not even mentioned, then it launched into ‘you are so evil and call it religion and sleep with whoever you want’… No point in responding, but yikes. Where is the filter?
The iPhone apps I’m currently using most are the iTalk (recording device) for interviews, Grocery IQ for my shopping list, the game Scramble — for wasting time, I guess!, and the Kindle app. I am LOVING the Kindle app, but fear that combined with amazons ‘one-touch’ purchasing, could get me in very big trouble…! I use twittelator. Not crazy about it. May try some of those mentioned.
My wife and I created an iPhone app to strengthen marriages and family relationships. Those who have bought it really like it. You can see a demo at our website: http://www.43rdelement.com.
We also have a line of daily devotionals that are coming up: Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening is currently available, Dallas Willard’s Hearing God will be out within the next week, and we have 5+ in the queue.
BlackBerry rules, by the way clint is not my real name.
Our Delta flight from Atlanta to LAX was so full yesterday, they must of had a cancellation in the system. Someone coughed and sneezed the entire flight-so much for protecting people. You got upgraded-I am jealous.
OT – I’m considering refraining from talking with you, Mike until you return from Malibu, or quit crowing about being there, or both.
You really know how to bring out that ugly envy green, which really is not my best color. LOL Have a blessed and beautiful visit. I know you’ll bring great blessings to all those fortunate to hear you!! Come home safely, is my prayer as well! In Him, K
Swine flu; “over it, over hyped?” Perhaps, but a shifted strain of influneza is what killed 50 million people in 1918. The ONLY way to stop spreading the disease is to KEEP PEOPLE AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. That’s what you are not understanding. Influenza is the number 1 vaccine preventable killer of children in the US. Until you have lost someone over a “overhyped” hugely transmittable disease, you will think again. Wait until the fall. The past two pandemic’s of influenza started like this, and 5 months later hit with a vengance. Sorry, Im in infectious disease…soap box moment.
I love my Iphone. Some of my favs are
Olive Tree Bible – mostly for the concordance
iChess Lite – the practice gives me half a chance to offer competition to my students
Park Smart –
IQ Boost – They say use it or lose it and I’ve been losing it.
For iphone apps my walking partner and I enjoy trailguru. We can keep track of how far we are walking, how fast we are walking plus our elevation….and in the event that we get lost in the neighborhood we can call for help and give our exact longitude and latitude.
