Who Took Mr. Rogers Place?

2009 April 6
by Mike

I bet I’m a step ahead of most of you already today. I’ve already watched an episode of Sesame Street on the DVR. Having a just-turned-two-year-old in the house has reminded me that there is more than ESPN on television.

I’ve missed Elmo . . . and Lambchops (the song never ends, you know!) . . . and Captain Kangaroo . . . and Mr. Rogers. Yes, even Barney.

I don’t even know what children watch now. Presumably still Sesame Street. But what else?

I’m teaching for Randy Harris today while he attends the Michigan State/UNC game. What’s fair about that?

Finally a post where I feel like I can contribute :) I have a 3 yr old and an almost 2 yr. old. Here are their “faves”…

    On TV (or dvr):
    Barney
    Little Einsteins
    Backyardigans
    Dora
    Blue’s Clues
Elmo’s World (they don’t sit thru all of Sesame Street yet, but love when Elmo (or Cookie Monster) come on)

    On DVD:
Go Fish Guys (their tag line is “great music for kids that won’t drive their parents bonkers” We agree!)
Boz (from the makers of Barney–it’s the Christian version–even though they only mention Jesus on the C’mas dvd–my husband has already written them an email about it. It’s still good, just sad they don’t mention Jesus, only God)
Jana Alayra (Live in Concert 2–this is a HUGE fave for those that like to dance)
Baby Einstein (Neptune, Mozart, Doolittle, Newton)
Hillsong Kids (Jesus Your My Superhero)
    Praise Baby
Baby Faith (God Made Babies, God Made Music, etc)

I don’t think there is a new “Mr. Rogers” I checked out a dvd of his from the library once. It was a little too old (developmentally) for my kids but I am excited for the day when they hear “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and come running to watch!

Miss Patty Cake is a close “Mr. Rodgers” but her dvds are sorta hard to find.

    Hope that helps :)

My first time to comment as well. Kind of funny that it’s about toddler TV. My 2 y.o. little boy LOVES Sesame Street. That makes me happy, b/c I still love it, too. He’s also a fan of Blue’s Clues and the Backyardigans.

We get a channel on cable here that translates lots of kid TV shows into Portuguese. The nearly 20-month-old at my house likes Barney (they even translate all the songs! And pretty well, I might add!) She also likes the Backyardigans, Clifford and Mister Maker. Technically, Mister Maker (which teaches kids how to make art projects) is too old developmentally for her, but she likes to watch it. For me, it teaches great vocabulary that’s helpful in Bible class!

We’re big fans of Noggin at our house, Mike! That is a cable channel that plays only preschool shows by Nickelodeon, and has no commercial advertising. Given that, our five year old (and his Dad) is a big fan of:

    Wonder Pets
    Little Bill
    Ni Hao Kai Lan
    Blue’s Clues
    Toot & Puddle
    Wow! Wow! Wubzie
pretty much the whole Noggin lineup

Chemaine and I have really been thankful for this option since getting DirectTV, because we have felt confident in all the programming we have seen, so far, and it allows us to offer shorter options of viewing time besides popping in a full length DVD. Also, our little guy loves the games at noggin.com.

What’s gonna work? – Teamwork! (It’s a Wonder Pets thing)

How could I forget the Backyardigans?!?

  9. April 6, 2009

Backyardigans and Blues’ Clues are always terrific. But there’s one show on NickJr or Noggin which overwhelms everything else in terms of raw coolness:

Yo Gabba Gabba. It’s like The Great Space Coaster crossed with a Devo video.

Trust me…you’ll love it. (Or hate it).

Wow, I remember the days when Matt wasn’t even 2 – we’d watch Mr. Rogers until we realized that Matt wasn’t even in the room anymore and we were sitting there watching it!!! LOL!! I hope you enjoyed Reese – I wish I could see her!!

    Mike,

I treated Randy to lunch today knowing he’d be with 70k plus MSU fans in Detroit tonight. To be fair, he’s bought my lunch more than a few times.

You got the short end on that one for sure. You should have opened your class with quoting Jesus about the wedding banquet of Jesus (and who’ll be invited). :)

Loved the posts on Christianity. We had Jenkins speak at Rochester College a few years back and he was outstanding.

    David,

Good call on Yo Gabba Gabba! My son loves it. I’m leaning toward hate it, but remain uncommitted. It kinda reminds me of The Electric Company and ZOOM on excessive Adderall or something.

Reese singing “Tomorrow” from Annie is my all-time latest favorite kid’s video clip. I’ve played it over & over for myself & friends! I get tickled every time! So nonchalant about it all, ’cause getting to the ice cream’s the thing. LOVE it. Please tell me there’s some footage of you & her singing AND dancing with Elmo from her latest visit to see the grand ‘rents.

No one, but no one can even begin to take Mr. Rogers place.

Where’s the clip of Reese singing “Tomorrow”?

Clueless about any such artists post 1995 – kind of like my Rock ‘n roll outlook as well.

One unnamed college student’s third or fourth words were big bird 20 years ago.

in our house Hi-5 is a must and of course veggie tales!!! pretty much anything that has singing… if there no singing then you can bet it will not be on long… super why is turning into a good one even with out the singing … the older ones are a big fan of the magic school bus… but it is pretty hard to beat bob and larry the cucumber : )

  18. April 7, 2009

I don’t think anyone could take his place.

Yo Gabba Gabba has some serious problems. I would skip this one.

I am surprised no one mentioned the Imagination Movers. My 5 year old still loves this. Check them out, they are from New Orleans, and on the Disney Channel.

OK, Mike… if you’re referencing Sesame Street, you’re really talking preschool shows and there are no preschoolers at our house! HOWEVER (and I am totally serious about this…. NOT kidding….) you MUST see the show Phineas and Ferb! Basic premise…. two hideously brilliant brothers create outlandish inventions. Their sister is appalled by them and their parents don’t really understand what the problem is. There is a superhero type platypus and a bumbling bad guy named Dr. Doofenshmirtz. HE is the most hysterical! Our entire family has cried laughing at this show! I think it’s on Disney, but not totally sure. It is PRICELESS! The writing is completely BRILLIANT. Do yourself a favor and set your DVR for a couple of episodes. :)

Amy – we LOVE Phineas & Ferb too – hysterical! Almost as funny as ‘Catscratch’ – I miss that show!

David the Gnome was the best circa 1987/88. They need to bring it back.
