This blog is approaching five years. My first post was August 4, 2003. What do you suppose is the average for blog longevity?

Is it just the mood I was in when I saw this — or does it impact you, too, with a fresh sense of God’s transforming love?

I just read Chris Erdman’s Countdown to Sunday: A Daily Guide for Those Who Dare to Preach. I’ll grant you that this isn’t Buttrick, Craddock, Long, or Wilson (some who’ve written wonderful homiletics books) — but it’s one I wish I’d written!
I’d encourage every young preacher to get a copy and zip through it. This is not from the old seminary model where ministers were taught to spend their week in the office with the door shut getting ready for Sunday. It’s for preachers who have to prepare “on the run” (a phrase he adopted after hearing Walter Brueggemann suggest “a little exegetical method for preaching on the run”). It presents a rhythm that rings true to my life.
In addition, he has insightful words about illustrations, weddings, funerals, hospitals, sabbath — as well a chapter on the timely topic of “preaching and war.”

I’ll be taking a brief hiatus from writing here. Diane and I are leaving tomorrow for twelve days. We’re traveling to Turkey with four dear friends to visit the ancient sites of Ephesus, Hierapolis, Colossae, Laodicea, etc., as well as to learn about and enjoy modern Turkey. Here’s what I’ll be preaching for the month following our return.
If I have a chance to post from there, I will. This is our first time to visit “Bible lands” — and we can’t wait.
