Mike, it has been a phenonenal year for Bernard and the Wildcats, and it was certainly fun watching him play. It's getting close to banquet time, and I'm certainly cheering for him to win. He reminded me of Wilbert Montgomery as I watched him play (oops, giving away my age!). I hope his career and life can be as successful as wilbert's. He was fortunate to have you for one of his Bible teachers.

Good for you Jenni! If you're interested, the game last week was broadcast over the internet here:

http://www.tx.prepcountry.com

I believe kick-off is 12 noon at Texas Stadium. I listened last week and it was a good feed. I'll update as I find out more info (sorry for turning your blog into a high school playoff frenzy Mike).

My family is from Pulaski, TN very near Florence, AL. I have an Aunt and Uncle that have a house on 2nd Creek in Florence. I've been there a few times playing on the mighty Tennessee River.

I thought Matt was giving us some important stuff there for a moment - like Bernard's stats for the season. ;-) Congrats on the year 'Cats and Bernard.

I posted here about my Eagles two weeks ago hoping they would be competitive against the mighty Southlake Carroll Dragons - and lo' and behold they shocked the state. I have a nervous feeling about the big Pflugerville Panthers for this Saturday at Texas Stadium. I implore all to say a cheer for the AHS Eagles to make it to the Alamodome in 2007!

Haggai...wow, what a prophet for the poor in spirit, and for those who despair at what the modern church has become (paneled houses, Pyrrhic political victories, spiritual desolation, all manner of modern analogs in an affluent, leisure-drenched, consumerist and individualist culture).

Too many contemporary angles, not enough time.

The part that touches me the most is the account of the older men weeping and wailing because the rebuilt temple is looking pretty pathetic compared to the one they remember from their pre-Nebuchadnezzar youth.

And then the parallel prophecy that reaches out to the humble with this beautiful consolation, in Zechariah 4:10 - "for who has despised the day of small things?"

I'm jealous. How did it go, and where did you go with it?

Congratulations to Bernard.

Florence is also my home... and Harlon Hill, a family friend. My older brother was in school with Harlon at the University of North Alabama.

It's a small world.

I saw Scott at the game at Chadron over Thanksgiving(5 hour drive for us from Co. Springs). He was amazing! He's got some stout competition, including the RB from Chadron... Go 'Cats! (it was a tough loss to watch in person when I hadn't been to an ACU game in 20+ years!)

I taught Haggai not long ago and I remember driving home the point of his first sermon in Chapter one: Make God's priorities your first priority!

Congratulations to Bernard. Florence, AL is home for me. As a matter of fact, Harlon Hill was first the football coach then principal of my high school back in the early 80's. I know Coach Hill and the award is a great honor. Coach Hill is a member at my home congregation in Killen, AL just outside Florence. He is in poor health these days.

Considering where he is arriving from, Bernard may never come home from God's country and the beautiful Tennessee river! :)

Think I'm biased?

A couple of random Haggai tidbits.

Date - 520 BC

1:1-11 (Aug 29) - this section also resembles the curses found in Deut 27-28
1:12-15a (Sept 21)
a:15b-2:9 (Oct 17) - see also Ezra 3:10-13
2:10 & 2:20-23 (Dec 18)

During the Persian reign. The decree of Cyrus happened 18 years prior sending many back to Jerusalem. Darius had just become king (521 - see Ezra 5:3-6:12). He helped with the rebuilding efforts. Now Haggai encourages them to continue. It could be that the people were worshiping among the ruins of the temple (Jer 41:5)

More tidbits:
1:7 literally reads, "Put to heart the paths you have walked."
1:12 - "obeyed" is literally "heard" - the tight connection between hearing and obedience is reflected in the NIV.
1:13 - Haggai called the same word for "angel"/"messenger"
Key verse - 2:4 - Take courage, why? Because God is with them.
2:6 - See Isa 45:14, 60:4-7, 61:6, 2:2-4 & Zech 8:20-23
2:10-14 - Syncretism is as bad and defiling as touching a corpse.
