Pats . . . A Cappella . . . AHS . . . ACU

Big game tonight between the Cowboys and Packers, two 10-1 teams, who are wanting the inside track for the privilege of getting crushed by the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Probably several of you out there who participate in this blog have high school students who are interested in ACU. If you need someone to help find out more information about the school, I’d be glad to be the place where you begin. I at least know who to put you in touch with. If you would like any information about the school and would like to visit with me by email, please drop Gina a note (gina@highlandchurch.org) and she’ll get the info to me. I’ll be in touch with you!

In addition to my class with Zoe at Pepperdine (Isn’t this about 10 years, Brandon?), I’ll be doing a class on a cappella music with Darryl Tippens. Who knew that I’d be the one speaking on behalf of a cappella music? I have a feeling several people didn’t get a vote on that one. We’re calling it “Singing in a New Key.” I’ll tell you more about what we’re going to say later. (After Darryl tells me!)

Abilene High’s next playoff game is against Southlake Carroll, a team that is 90-2 since becoming a 5A school.

The paper today had some interesting comparisons between Abilene, a city deeply impacted by white flight, and Southlake. The average median household income in Abilene is $33,007, while in Southlake it is $131,549. The average median home value in Abilene is $61,100, while in Southlake it’s $418,967.

The last couple times, it hasn’t gone well when we hit Carroll in the playoffs. I think this year may be different.

    Hey Mike,

Go Cowboys. I predict 35 - 21 Pokes. I love Favre, though. It’s hard to root against him.

On a different note, someone was telling me that there was some type of group health insurance now available to Church of Christ ministers, and that ACU had something to do with that? Do you know anything about it or who to talk to? I would be interested in finding out about it.

    Brad,

    http://www.clbabenefits.org/

I got this from Edward Fudge’s email just a day or two ago. That might be where it came from.

The Superintendent in Southlake ISD is a former Aggie for Christ (Class of ‘86) and a remarkable guy. He learned his craft of public-school superintendency in one of the tougher places in the state, Navasota ISD; he was highly regarded during his tenure and by all reports had a forward-leaning, transformative influence on the culture. The demographics of Navasota ISD are about equally distributed across blacks, whites and Hispanics, and 2/3 of the families there are classified as “economically disadvantaged.”

Not sure that proves anything, but only to observe that the guy in charge of Southlake ISD these days is no stranger to educating the marginal and disadvantaged. No doubt his challenges these days are quite different, but his Christian witness is undoubtedly the same.

QB - Great comment. Just the kind of person who’s needed in a position like that (as well as in positions like bus driver, cafeteria worker, coach, teacher, etc.). The church has left the building!

Having said that, I still hope their excellent record is 90-3 after the game Saturday at Texas Stadium!

Brad, that website above is the correct web address for the new group insurance plan for ministers in Churches of Christ. It launches January 1.

    Mike-

As an alum of Cooper, I have a very hard time rooting for the Eagles, even after almost 10 years since graduation. I still take pride in the fact that we smoked AHS in football all four years that I was in high school from ‘94-’98. If I remember correctly, Abilene High scored like one offensive touchdown against us while I was there. For those of us who grow up in Abilene we are conditioned to love one and hate the other. It’s not necessarily healthy but it’s just how it is.

With all that said, though, I truly would love to see Abilene High beat Southlake. It is time for them to lose and for their dynasty to end. And it would be so fitting for Abilene High, the team whose records Southlake is chasing, to be the ones to end it. Best of luck to the Eagles and Steve Warren!

I think AHS should play North Texas U.

Are you going to play your Youtube clip at the class?

    Hey qb,

Who is the Aggie that’s the superintendent at Southlake? That would have been my class had I hung around till the end………… Man, that brings back some great memories. AFC trips, devo, hanging out in the “C” (is that right, the “C” = student center), taking Chem 101 where I failed all 5 exams, scored a 98 on the final and made a B in the class. That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Also, thanks Kyle and Kent for the insurance info. That has been a thorn in my side since I began preaching. Maybe this will help.

  11. 11 Brad

OK, maybe the insurance thing won’t help. I just looked at the rates. Holy upward spiraling premiums, Batman!!

  12. 12 Jon

I’ve come to believe that “Class Flight” is the appropriate term, although I hate to lose rhyme.

  13. 13 preacherman

I believe that the Cowboys and AHS will win. :-)

I am visualizing it as I type - a boxed set could be launched after this next appearance…Zoe could market several speakers from the conference.

Mike Cope Sings the Classics..in a new key.
Randy Harris Sings the Classics…in a new color
Jeff Walling Sings the Classics…as a new character
Sara Barton Sings the Classics…in a new gender
Larry James Sings the Classics…in the city
Brandon Scott Thomas Sings the Classics… simply to redeem the Classics

Last time I checked, Giddens, which was a couple of weeks ago, David Faltys was still the Super in Southlake ISD. He carries a “Dr.” prefix now (visualize *that*!), but I doubt he’s let it go to his head.

Come to think of it, qb needs to contact Faltys again to refresh my memory of the fret positions for the riff in “Purple Haze.” qb

I am rooting for Abilene High. I would love for them to beat SLC. SLC beat our team in ‘02, ‘04, and ‘05 in the State Semi-finals. We are out this year. Good Luck Eagles.

  17. 17 Rogers B

Miami Northwestern H.S. whupped Southlake at their own place this year, so Southlake is not invincible. Of course, Miami NW is no slouch either…

  18. 18 SG

    Arlene that was classic!

    Hi Mike
Any chance we can hear that game on the radio? Our grandson will be on the sidelines in a sling for a separated shoulder. He was really bummed he couldn’t suit up. He was hoping that the Eagles will beat Soutlake so well that he would get a chance to get on the field, even though he is stil a JV. We will probably be Eagle fans from the longest distance cheering for them. So Africa is cheering for the Eagels. Well at least Namwianga Mission, Zambia

  20. 20 KentF

I would never pray for my Warbirds to beat the Dragons - but I’m looking for some/any kind of divine intervention Sat. afternoon. I’ve made my peace with SLC over the years - but enough is enough. Go Eagles!

  21. 21 Kathy

I know everyone in Texas is giddy about the Dallas win over Green Bay last night.

Just a thought or two about the comparison between SLC and Abilene:

SLC - Huge metropolitan area accompanied by higher cost of living, higher salaries and higher housing costs, among other things.

Abilene - Small city out on the prairie with lower cost of living and salaries, and housing costs.

Comparisons can skew reality sometimes, imho.

  22. 22 Bill

Wow!!! What a big win for AHS.

  23. 23 KentF

Not sure if that final fumble that AHS recovered was divine intervention - but let’s claim it - yeah Eagles!

Passing through and wanted to say hello
