Gruene

We joined four other families for Thanksgiving break in Gruene, Texas — a tiny town whose motto is “gently resisting change since 1872.” Why do I feel so at home there?

If you ever get a chance to stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn, don’t miss it! Great view (perched above the Guadalupe River), great rooms, great owners (thanks, Cecil and Judy!), and great location. It’s right smack next to Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, and the Gristmill Restaurant.

Here are a couple pictures of the nineteen of us — first at the top of Enchanted Rock (near Fredericksburg) and then at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

Mike–Gruene is such a great place! Reading your post makes me want to go back to the Grist Mill and then walk down the street to that little store that seems to have everything. (Can’t remember the name of it–I just recall buying ice cream there on a very hot Texas July day.)

Jim - I think it’s the Gruene General Store. And they DO have a bit of everything.

Randy and Pam - We are remembering Jantsen today. Hard to imagine him at the age of 24. What a blessing to our life he was and is.

What, no pictures of you and the family at Gruene Hall?

I like the town’s motto (”Gently resisting change since 1872″). Not all change is good. Some proposed changes to need resisting - gently. Other proposed changes should be “graciously accepted.” Seems like this might be good double advice for churches, no?

When my wife and I lived in Austin, we enjoyed taking day trips to Gruene. It’s a wonderful little town.

  7. 7 Uncle Steve

I hope your house wasn’t trashed when you got back to it.

“Uncle Steve” - Your nephew and niece left it cleaner than they found it, I believe. Hope they enjoyed hanging at the Copes’ while the Copes were hanging at Gruene.

Charlie S. - What is this “Shiner” of which you speak?

That looks like a beautiful place to visit from looking at the website. I take it you all were taking advantage of the Estrogen Package?

    *chuckle*

    Charlie S., you rascal, you.

Gruene is well within striking distance of Kreuz’ in Lockhart, where the world’s most perfect (*ahem* non-clergyman’s) meal consists of a couple of links, a half-package of saltines, some unpickled Serrano peppers, a slice of onion, a cold dill pickle, and an uber-frosty Sh*ner B*ck.

Or at least that’s the rumor I’ve heard.

Off topic, but I ran across a post about Larry James in the Dallas Observer Blog. If anyone is interested:

So I’ve always been disturbed by that sign “Gently Resisting Change Since 1872″

I’m not getting on to Mike cause I love you too much, but it’s always seemed like a bad idea to start resisting change around 1872.

Anyways, it’s a great place other than that.
