The question that cannot be entertained in the churches of Christ, or in Christendom, in general, is -- where in the scripture is mention made of Christians gathering together for group worship? If you want to talk about "silence" about something meaning it is not "authorized," then you are in big trouble right from the get-go on "worship services."

The Christians met. The Christians were not to forsake the custom/habit of meeting. They ate the Lord's Supper together (if not done personally worshipful, no good). Their minds were to be on one another, considering one another, stimulating one another, edifying one another. "Worship services" are simply not mentioned.

God's blood-washed people are divided over a non-issue -- viz., what is supposedly prescriptively authorized as acceptable corporate worship to God. It is absurd.

Declaring something to either be or not be a salvation issue is a bold thing. It also seems to be rather legalistic.

It is a statement by a person that they understand the mind of God better than someone else and therefore are capable of pronouncing which things are matters of salvation and which are not.

For those who claim to be wise enough to know what is and is not a salvation issue...the rest of us need help. Can you share the complete list of "salvation issue" items so we can all know what we need to be paying more attention to?

The best course any individual can take when it comes to relationship with God is to 1) Realize you are saved by grace. 2) Study God's word and put in your hearts. 3) live within the framework God has established.

Remember, there were plenty of examples of those in the OT who thought they got what God was saying and would help Him out by following a plan of their design. The outcomes usually were not that positive.

How would you like to be sitting there on judgement day and hear God say to you" Now friend, you said __________ was not a salvation issue. Well, guess how many people have been lost as a result of your words?"

In the parable of the servant who hid his talent for fear of the master, I have to wonder how much of the "Biblical Truth" is motivated by the fear of the master?

Did Jesus set a trap for us by using music in the example of the prodigal son's returning to the father?

Luke 15: 24for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.

25"Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.

Or does Jesus mean to portray God the father as hypocritical in nature? Or could it possibly be that the original Christian followers were hunted people and in danger of death and that a musical celebration would have brought the hunters down on them quickly?

Just think of it, a story used to trap believers into a trip to hell, wow what a god some of us serve!

GIRADEAU "The church, although lapsing more and more into deflection from the truth and into a corrupting of apostolic practice, had not instrumental music for 1200 years (that is, it was not in general use before this time); The Calvinistic Reform Church ejected it from its service as an element of popery, even the church of England having come very nigh its extrusion from her worship. It is heresy in the sphere of worship." (John Giradeau, Presbyterian professor in Columbia Theological Seminary, Instrumental Music, p. 179)

PRESBYTERIAN "Question 6. Is there any authority for instrumental music in the worship of God under the present dispensation? Answer. Not the least, only the singing of psalms and hymns and spiritual songs was appointed by the apostles; not a syllable is said in the New Testament in favor of instrumental music nor was it ever introduced into the Church until after the eighth century, after the Catholics had corrupted the simplicity of the gospel by their carnal inventions. It was not allowed in the Synagogues, the parish churches of the Jews, but was confined to the Temple service and was abolished with the rites of that dispensation." (Questions on the Confession of Faith and Form of Government of The Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, published by the Presbyterian Board of Publications, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1842, pg. 55.)

When did worship become "one of the littliest things in life?" I recall that Jesus spoke of worshipping God "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).

Great article. It is sad that the little things in life cause divisions among the family of God. We need to look past the littlest things in life and focus on Jesus and the Gospel.

Have a discussion about how to help a hurting world. But you can also have one about worship. Lots of blogs to discuss both.
