Series Prediction
It’ll be Los Angeles and New York playing in the World Series. But not the Dodgers and Yankees. Angels vs. Mets. Remember that you read it here. Any better guesses? (I have installed a filter that will prevent you from even suggesting the Yankees will be in the Series.)

It’s a little hard to listen to students moan about doing papers for their classes.
I remember (warning: old guy memory alert) . . . when we TYPED those papers on typewriters. Anyone else remember finishing the last footnote on a page, only to discover that there was a mistake that white-out couldn’t fix?
When I think of Rick Oster, one of the most important teachers of my life (NT at Harding Grad School), I think of all the times I was pecking away at papers in the middle of the night, trying not to have to start all over again.
Hurrah for computers and software that does the footnoting for you!
Yankess, Yankees, Yankees!!! Go Yanks!
I was there for the last of the typewriter days. Sometimes page layout was harder than writing the content and documentation (footnoted, Chicago Manual of Style; oh the joys). Rick Oster used to tell us that the 20-25 page requirement was there to discourage people from turning in 50-page papers.
Man, those typewriter days! What I would have given for a Starbucks in ACU’s Brownlibrary bakc then! As it was, I had brought in contraband coffee and snacks, sneaking down to a hideout in the basment (man, was it dark and creepy in those days!), and then loked myself in overnight in one of the back group rooms. Is it any wonder my papers were such disasters in those days?
I LOVE my laptop!!!
(LOCKED myself in overnight…)
Any post season without the Cardinals doesn’t really count.
I think of the times at Harding when, on my little portable manual typewriter, I pushed the carriage return, watched the page come floating out the top, and realized I had typed off the end of the page, yet again.
I’m testing the filter.
The Yanks will go all the way. I know, I know. You’ll point to the Angels domination of the Yanks this year and in the years past but the Yanks were without their young guys then. Now they have some new, cocky, confident young guns that aren’t afraid of anything. Joba says, “bring ‘em on!”
Mike, admit it – the Yanks are the best team in the MLB right now!
I remember the typewriter days. I finally sold my old Sears typewriter for $15 at a garage sale. I had to — it was maggot-infested there at the end.
My first college computer was a 386 with a dot matrix printer. My roomates wanted to shoot me for printing at 12:00 a.m. I did learn typing on IBM selectrics in high school…yet still not as antiquated as actually USING them for a paper. That makes me tired just thinking about it.
Thanks for bringing back the frustrating memories, Mike! I was at the end of typewriter days as well, like Frank. I had the one where you could replace the entire last row you typed! But if you spotted a mistake one more row back you were toast!
I was so thankful for the little freshman student in the LEC that handed me a disk and said, “Stick it in that computer over there and wait for the smiley face…then follow the instructions.” That smiley face was my savior and, well, we’ve never looked back… Typewriters… no way…
Or misjudging the amount of room you needed at the end of the page for footnotes and ending up with too little margin on the page or no margin and having to redo the whole page…Thank you God for computers!
One low moment in my life was handing a paper in to Dr. Zelma Odle that I copied pretty much word for word. She handed it back to me while taking the final with this written “I cannot accept this paper since it is too similar to one I’ve had earlier.” She let me do another paper rather than fail me for the class. I actually learned something about Shakespeare. Undeserving grace abounded that day in April 1976.
I love your blog.
I read a quote from Jarrod Washburn today. He said the reason the Angels would win the World Series is because they have the best big-game pitcher in the Major Leagues.
I’m pretty sure you know who he was talking about.
I think your blog, Mike, needs “white out” for David and Joe’s Yankee comments. HA!
Just Kidding.
Though I am not feeling too proud of my Red Sox right now, I am hopeful The Nation will prevail.
Another reason to love the computer … spell checker. I love spell checker. I can’t spell a lick, and now you don’t even know it! Yea. Makes me look smart and I need all the help I can get.
Please let it be anyone winning the World Series but a New York team.
And, why do they call it the “World Series” when only 2 countries are involved?
My freshman year roommate had a pre-computer word processor, was a creative writing major for a semester, and felt most “creative” at two in the morning. She would warn me, then print out a page at a time. It sounded like a machine gun. I’m wondering if that machine was the reason she switched to teacher ed…?
Indians beat the Phillies in 6.
World Series MVP : Fausto Carmona.
My term papers were done on a long carriage L C Smith manual typewriter that Daddy bought after WWII as surplus shortly after he came home from England.
I’ll go with the LA Angels and the Chi-town Cubs – Cubs to win!
Yankees over Mets in a Subway Series….the Cubs will not win it till Mark Cuban buys the team
JOE – The left side of the Yankees infield has a payroll that surpasses the GNP of half the world’s nations. HOWEVER, they are not the best team in baseball right now, Joe. A brief roll, yes. But get past the Angels? No way. Seems like we’ve been down this road before with some kind of bet, haven’t we? How’d that work for you?
Jones -
Alas, there is another Indians fan! Could this be our year?
I gotta go with the Cubs . . .
Not only will the Yanks fail to win the Series, they will collapse this week to find themselves in a tie with the Tigers. Detroit will then beat them in a one game playoff (which is actually regular season game 163).
Then, the Indians and D-backs will play in the World Series, drawing an average TV viewing audience of 322 people.
(My real prediction is a long awaited rematch–Red Sox beat the Mets)
I’m pulling for the Indians – not sure why. I must confess…I used an “electric” typewriter for my papers.
What’s a typewriter?
Go Cubs!
how bout those cowboys…
HA! Don’t even get ME started on HGSR and Rick Oster. Carroll Osburn was another stickler. I remember my roommate cutting and pasting his papers to avoid doing the footnotes for each page. In other words he would type footnotes and paper separate and then cut and paste and copy on copier at the library. A pretty ingenious trick that worked quite well.
Peace
There’s something ethereally attractive about the idea of
ANGELS vs PADRES
However, there is no ethereallity
in baseball – but maybe at least half will make it. California’s own Angels including Texas’ own, now what IS that pitcher’s name? Oh yeah, John Lackey.
As far as the NL is concerned, if the Padres can’t get there, may it be someone from the West, like the Rockies. But again, baseball is cruel with dreams.
I actually feel young over here. Or, maybe it’s just that I didn’t turn in any papers! Reason #23 to major in accounting.
Conard Hayes…The Redemptive History of Israel…typed out all my answers to the 250 question syllabus on a manual typewriter in Kendall dorm. Those were the days, huh?
The year of the Cubs!
I’ve not read all the other predictions but I’d go with Angels and Cubs. I have the Angels in six games with Vlad as the MVP.
It should be a great October. That kills me to say, seeing as I was banking on the Tigers making another appearance.

Josh,
Los Angeles may be the city of Angels but God is always for the down-and-out, therefore God is with the Cubs:-).
And if not, Rex, just wait ’till next year.
I am writing my thesis now for my M.Div, and yes, I am thankful for computer, could not imagine the old style way.
http://www.matthewsblog.waynesborochurchofchrist.org
That’s right, Rex. God is indeed all about the down-n-out. The Yanks looked pitiful, downright ugly, to begin the season. More than 14 games out of first. It looked grim.
We’ve all witnessed a miracle, no? The Yanks are giving the BoSox a run this week while securing (sorry, Paul M.) the wild card. Truly a miracle from where they were just a few months ago. A miracle.
God does indeed look favorably upon the lowly. Go Yankees!
As for that bet, Mike – that was then. And this is now – Yanks are the best in baseball right now!
Lowly and Yankees in the same breath? Talk about oxymorons!
Sentimentally? Indians-Cubs.
Mentally? Yankees in 7 over whoever.
Fight’n Phils!
So, as it turns out this is the worst series prediction I’ve ever made. I counted on a team that isn’t even going to be in the playoffs. The NY Mets now have accomplished one of the worst last-minute collapses in baseball history. Let me recalibrate.
Well, Mike, the Padres seem to be trying to following Met’s suit. So now I’m in the situation of having to hope the d’Backs will beat the Rockies today so we don’t have to go to a tie breaker in Denver tomorrow. Yipes and Grrrr!
Heh, heh…
qb loves* ya, Kathy, but he can’t resist a chuckle about the lowly Rockies having a one-game shot at sending the Padres home for October. qb’s not wagering anything on it – he’s got too much Texas A&M football experience ever to predict a big win in a pivotal game – but you have to admit the Rockies have made a stirring run for the roses. You really do. And if the Padres win tomorrow, I’ll be joining you in their camp.
qb
((((qb))))
Well, they did it. The Rockies are probably the most exciting team on the scene this year and probably, [begrudgingly admitting it. Ouch! that hurt] deserve to go to post season. the Padres have shown a death wish, so may well get their wish tonight. My hat off to Buddy Black though. First year as skipper, one of the few ex-pitchers to take on the challenge, and has done a great job. He’s like the girl with the curl though. And lately he’s been very bad in some of his decisions. He’s a quick study though and next year should be exciting again.
I still wave the Padres’ flag but will lower it in recognition of the Rockies great ride if it comes down to that tonight about 10PM.
Mets crumbled and didn’t even make the playoffs.
I say Red Sox and Phillies.
Similar prediction…
“IT’S NOT OFFICIAL, BUT NL EAST RACE IS OVER”
By KEVIN KERNAN
August 26, 2007 — MEMO to Jimmy Rollins: The best team won.”
(At least he got the first sentence correct.)
More here…

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. That was the World Series as far as qb is concerned. I just hope the Rockies hold up their end of the deal now and don’t pull a “1995 roll-over” against the Phillies. It would be a shame for a great team like the Padres to have to endure a Phillies sweep of the Rockies now. qb
It was a great and puzzling game at the same time. Both teams did what baseball is all about; they fought hard to reach the finish line. I agree, QB – this was the WS game for me. I doubt the others leading to WS champions come even close to the excitement and emotion of last night.
Now! Rockies! Go do your job – get rid of the Phillies and anyone else that stands in your way to the WS ring! My flag is lowered in respect for last night, although I still hold that the last call was wrong. He never touched home plate. [just HAD to get that one in there. LOL] It was our Hoffman that lost the game for us, again. He just seems to fall apart in crucial games, especially when it comes to post season. Oh well. Go Rockies!!!
Jim Rome agrees with you, Kathy, and said it was a real shame that a game that important turned on a missed call at the plate. I didn’t see it, but I hafta agree with Rome if it was as dubious a call as he claims. Alas, go NL West champs (whoever you should have been)!

Matt was safe. Check out these photos. I am convinced. The cleat marks in Matt’s hand are proof enough for me (to all you doubting Thomases
).
At any rate, what fantastic game.
HAhahah you suck
