Last night was the second straight week we drove to Odessa for a freshman football game. Oh, the good days of high school out-of-town games are back! On any given Friday night, it seems like a high percentage of West Texas residents are on the road!
Tomorrow is the funeral for the 28-year-old nephew of my brother and sister-in-law. Dallas was an amazing young man, whose disposition remained positive through all those years of poor health. Even though he wasn’t my blood relative, it felt like he was. My life is better for knowing him. I think of my brother and sister-in law, who have now lost a son, a niece, and a nephew.
Mike,
Football is almost a religion in West Texas! I am an Odessa Permian alumnus so I know how it is! Have a great day!
We were in the Dallas area last weekend. I was amazed at the high school football stadiums. Our son is the worship minister at the NorthPointe church in Murphy. They meet in a school where the stadium is larger and nicer than most small colleges.
BTW: Had the best Mexican food ever at the Blue Goose Cantina!
Hi Mike
Enjoy doing that lovely drive. We did it all last year for our grandson Justin Young, for football and basketball. In addition we were traveling with a bored 11/12 year old grand daughter who wasn’t too thrilled about the trip or the game, and a 5 year old also. We got to watch a lot of cinderella videos and sing all the songs from her DVD’s. But it was great and we miss it a lot since Justin is now JV and we cant see him play while we are here in Zambia. If you mention football in Africa they think you are talking about soccer. We look forward to being able to see Justin and the rest of our grandkids next year when we come home on furlough. So Enjoy for us. Don and Laura
According to your blog congregation, football is NOT more important than religion! They voted with their comments…..or lack of.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DU
football?? footBALL?? FOOTBALL? Humpf!
btw-Mike, what happened there between the Cards and the Astros? Ouch!!!
But away from sports comments, my heart goes out to your brother and sister-in-law! May they find peace in God’s promised presence and comforting healing. When I look at Pam’s face I see that love and peace in her eyes. That’s some special lady your brother married. My sympathies and hugs to all of you during yet another time of grief and mourning.
Mike,
Having spent seven years in Abilene, I was introduced to high school football. It was truly an experience. I attended one AHS/Cooper game (the first one AHS one in about 893 years), and it is still among the greatest sports experiences I have ever witnessed.
About the young man who lost his life, I understand your statement, “Even though he wasn’t my blood relative, it felt like he was.”
On Monday, my wife and I said goodbye to a good family friend. He walked with my dad through a difficult time in his life. But even without that, he was a great, godly man. My family benefited from knowing him, and even though Shawna and I had only seen him and his wife 2 or 3 times in our ten years of marriage, we are both saddened by his passing. At 52, he was too young. But there is comfort in knowing his resting place. There is comfort in knowing how many lives he touched. I will pray for you and his family tomorrow.
Mike, I tried to send a message to you, but WordPress says I’d already sent it. Could it be sitting in the mysterious ‘moderating’ drawer of your blog? Hmmm?
Go Eagles!
Odessa…now that’s a land flowing with milk and honey.
I hope your boys won!
