You probably read about the church shooting in my hometown of Neosho, MO. There’s excellent coverage at the Neosho Daily News – the paper my family owned as I was growing up and where much of my childhood and teen years were spent.

We’re having fun following the Laredo Del Mar junior league team — the one that beat us in the state championship game, 4-3. They won the SW regional tournament in Colorado and are now 2-0 in the World Series in Michigan.

I’ll look forward to seeing some of you this Sunday if you’re bringing a new student to ACU. There’s a good chance I might have your child in Bible class. Let me know if I do.
This is the Sunday we always go back to two services. But somebody goofed on the church calendar. I thought it wasn’t me. Everyone else on staff thinks it was me. So, who knows? (Just kidding — I’m sure it was me.)
Anyway, we’ll have one nice, big service at 9:00, using crowbars to get people in. The next Sunday we’ll return to two services.
This month began my 17th year at Highland. It’s been such a joy to be part of this faith community. Some of the months went slowly, but the sixteen years have flow by.

Check out this piece by Larry James. What a great idea for presidential candidates . . . and maybe for Christian leaders.
Steve and I checked out the Neosho Daily News yesterday, guess Steve’s dad worked there too. I am not clear on what the religion is of the Islanders, but maybe it had nothing to do with that anyway. Just very sad for a small town to get their name in the press over something negative.
Are you sure you’ve been at Highland for 17 years? You left College Church after my sophomore year. That seems more like maybe 10 years ago. Please tell me you’re wrong about the dates. There’s no way I’m that old; I certainly don’t feel it.
Gotta love the one service! I may have a full praise team just because people can’t find seats anywhere else. See you then.
Early service at Highland with your college student, then a quick jump over to IHOP (Cracker Barrel is over-crowded and wayyy over-rated). Nothing sweeter! But, alas, we are new student parents no longer - so we wait a week this year.
Here’s to another great school year Mike!
I will be praying for the congregation in Neosho. - May God give the healing and strength that they need to go on and serve Him. Holy Spirit give them the peace the passes all understanding. Amen.
Mike, I love one service and I kind of like the idea of being smushed in. You just have to get there early to sit together and not so far back that you can’t recognize the people in the front.
Mike [and Julie]
I too love one service - - - - - 11:00am. LOL
I start my drive out to ACU on Friday. Whitney and her mom fly out and I pick them up in Dallas on the way through on Saturday. Hopefully we can see you Sunday, although Whitney’s roommate is Caroline Connwell, Vann Conwell’s daughter. Vann is over at Southern Hills and we may need to get over there to hook up Whitney and Caroline.
Anyway, Whitney is in one of your classes so get her started off on the right foot.
Peace.

Our hometown team is in the Little League World Series.
My 7 year old son is loving watching all the action on TV as we watch the Lubbock Western Little League go all the way!
And if you have a student headed to UT Austin, we’d love to see you at Westover Hills. We’ll be having a shindig after worship on Aug. 26th for all students and parents. Food and fellowship! Kevin Withem will be teaching through Sept. We’d love to build relationships with you as we serve Austin.

We leave tomorrow to bring our firstborn daughter, Ashley, to ACU. She is scheduled to be in your Bible class and we are thrilled!
Mike,
With lots of tears we left our Bailey to start her freshman year. She will be in your class and after hearing you at the candlelight devo she plans on coming to Highland for the first time this Sunday. As you know life has changed so much for her this summer but I am confident that ACU is where she should be. I know she will be blessed but we miss her. Hope to see you soon.
