But Beth... aren't you glad we can be the kind of people who hear the pain and anguish and frustration in people's hearts over the "naughty" or angry words?

I think Jesus would hear their hearts and know that something that needs to be said will find its way out one way or another.

If I push it back under and slap thier hands, they won't come talking to me again, AND... it'll fester. I want to apply the "quick to listen, slow to speak..." stuff to myself first... and I'm usually not good at that.

Also, this is a place where lots of people come to talk... some who don't necessarily call themselves "Christians".

Some of the language on yesterday's comments was crude, vulgar, and totally unnecessary. Christians are called to be pure in speech...even when they do not agree with what is being said (or written.)

"I'm so glad that the same God who can save me from my sins can save me from a little doctrinal error."

Boy, isn't that something I need to hear!
Preach on, sister.
(Sorry, Mike. Kind of got a little carried away.)

I have spent my whole adult life in error about some or most of the scriptures, because so many texts I thought I understood one way mean something completely different to me now. Then again, some folks think I was right originally and have more recently become mistaken. Perhaps, all things considered, I had better rely on his grace and promises, niether of which has ever failed...

What's been happening?
While you were gone, our Preacher passed the bar to Pastor! Woo Hoo!
Something about double honor is floating around in my C of C handbook.
Glad you're back. Don't forget Sunday afternoon...

I dunno what happened. You lost me at "counternarratives" and while I was trying to figure out what that meant at dictionary.com, 79 comments appeared on the previous post.

Ha-ha-ha! Aren't you just the funniest ever! You end up on the front page of the paper and you think you can just stir the proverbial pot?!?!?!?! :) You actually looked a little sleepy in the picture in the paper. Ha!

Many thoughts have swirled through my head reading through your post, the essays and the comments. Many of them would not be in the category of "speaking the truth in love", so I've refrained. I've thought several times back to my favorite elder at a church we went to about 13 years ago. He said, "I'm so glad that the same God who can save me from my sins can save me from a little doctrinal error." Words I haven't forgotten.

Big words, wordy sentences fully of big words, quotes from others about subjects which are supposed to validate arguements, self importance, arrogance, special knowledge of God's thoughts, theological wrangling, posturing and beating dead horses. Other than that nothing really.

I think God is truly independent from who we think it is. If not then it is not truly God or just the product of a self aware mind.

From my last paragraph, just wanted to fit into my description of my 1st paragraph.

I just got through reading a book co-authored by Karl Barth Yancy Hauweruas and Dietrich Yoder Breugaman. They hold the opinion that people should be decent to one another and that women are necessary for lots of things. They propose a world that is round and gravity is real. It's a great read; it's called "Shit I already Know but Pay People to Tell Me."

Welcome back. I would like your thoughts on the validity of the Luke Timothy Johnson article and this idea of experience dictating God, trumping Scripture if the two don't match up. Some lively discussion came up and I value your insights. Peace.
