What a weekend:
1) Performed the wedding ceremony for a second cousin of mine in Little Rock (they’ve both been Harding students). Pictures of me in a robe at the Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church will follow.
2) Got to hang out with Leon and Margaret in Searcy.
3) Got to hear Dusty preach in Conway this morning. Then got to baptize my niece after church.
4) Got to be with my mom on Mother’s Day.
5) Got to hold Reese when I returned to Abilene tonight.
That’s a good weekend.
Praise God for your weekend. We enjoyed a wonderful weekend as well. I hope family is as important to all of us younger pastors as it is to you Mike. You are a great example. Not perfect. But still someone to look up to. I praise God for you. Tell Diane Happy Mom’s Day from the Quiles.
Does it get any better than that? Blessings!
We went to a wedding at PHUMC a few months ago. Beautiful place.
And you showed up in a bathrobe?
Great weekends are wonderful. Check out what I did too. http://www.matthewmorine.blogspot.com Spent some time with a book and my wonderful family.
You made our good weekend even better, Mike–the way you were able to draw all of us into the moment as witnesses of holy matrimony was such a blessing, especially for Steve and me. You made a marker moment in our lives so much sweeter. Kathy
Great to see you again at Luke and Juliana’s wedding. You and your counterpart performed a wonderful ceremony. Its kinda scary how much you seemed to enjoy the robe! Looking forward to the pics.
Funny. I called my mom yesterday and she said something to the effect of, “I got to go to a Rangers/Angels game today. I got to hear Mike Cope on Wednesday. Good week.”
It was great to see you Mike. But next time, your preaching! Please!
A long phone conversation from daughter number one, who lives in Honolulu!
Another long phone conversation with daughter number two, who lives in San Diego county.! [lucky girls!!]
Lunch with very close friends, [who brought me to Abilene], hosted by their older daughter.!
Worshiping God with my Highland family; preaching by Jerry Taylor and pastoral prayer with Jim Clark!
Hugging Diane, wishing her a happy first-time grandmother’s day!
Priceless day!
Sounds like a great weekend! Dusty’s church is an awesome church. Dusty is a constant source of encouragement for me. They have been strong partners with us in Katrina Relief … and even provided significant portion of my income for this year. Some of their members are here this week assisting with the 100 Homes in 100 Days project. Glad you had such a good visit there…and were able to baptize your niece!
Mike, Seeing you, even for a brief moment at the Rehearsal Dinner & then Luke & Juliana’s wedding, was so nice. My ears were so pleased to hear you speak Daddy’s name & then Patrick & Lauren’s names—what a treat for Jimmy & me! Your part in the wedding ceremony was just the best—-the words SO sweet.
Our family thought you looked pretty cool in your robe. Alex especially loved the “mantle”(we’re not too familiar with UMC terminology) you wore with “Pax” embroidered on it. Being us, we also kinda wondered what you had on (or not) underneath. Could you let us all in on that?!
My Weekend:
Did a wedding Friday - new Christian couple in beautiful Colorado scenery.
Yardwork all morning Saturday… Yuck!
Afternoon with my 14 year old son just hanging out - Great!
Sunday: the usual teaching/preaching stuff, although a stellar Mom’s day sermon if I do say so…
Sunday afternoon nap but both the Red Wings and the Pistons lost…
There you go…
Isn’t there a more formal word than “robe” for our clergy? Surely, we can get the Levitical/Hebrew translation or something here - and a pic or two wouldn’t hurt either
.
Try “vestments” Kent. “Robe” sounds like you just got out of the shower.
Where are those folks that say you don’t believe in baptism anymore Mike?
My weekend was great for one of the very same reasons…I got to hold Reese too, for the first time! But I sure didn’t mind turning her over to you when you got home…glad you got to see her! Plus I had a great visit with Diane while I was there. We haven’t talked like that in a long time…definitely a great weekend!
Mike
Jealous you are with your grandchild, but glad for you too. We really miss being with our grandchildren, all 6 of them while we are here in Zambia. That probably is the hardest thing of all. But Sunday morning I got to hold a precious 2 year old orphan named Charles on my lap. He has the biggest eyes and loves to be cuddled. So I did. Praise God for the joy He brings through the wondrous eyes of children. Right now there are 13 2 year olds at the Haven and they capture my heart and whenever I need solace from missing my own, they fill in quite nicely. Hugs they love to give and receive.
I think “vestments” is a better word Kent. Robe seems to conjure up images of stepping out of the shower.
Yeah, “Vestments”! For some reason, that wouldn’t come to me when I was writing my comment. Thanks, Joel.
My Mother’s Day:
Went to church with my family and was expecting that my husband was going to leave immediately afterward to go to work all day (he’s working on a big deadline), BUT…
he announced to our 6 and 4 year old that we were going to fly their new kites that afternoon AND
he invited some of our best friends to lunch at our house AND
he cooked the lunch himself which was delicious AND
after flying kites in perfect weather we all hung out at our house for the rest of the day AND
had chocolate cake for dinner!
IT WAS A PERFECT SUNDAY AND A PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY!!!
A great Mother’s Day….
We got to church and Grant proceeds to lead the whole fam to the front row… I like to sit up close, but… please….
Jerry Taylor has finished preaching and Jim Clark is beginning an amazing pastoral prayer time when Nicholas (8 years old) turns around in the fold up front row seat and slides down– truly stuck. So, during the entire prayer, I’m trying desperately NOT to laugh, which everyone knows does NOT work during prayers in church. Grant tries to pull him out… no luck… another kind friend tries to pull him out… no luck. I’m really wishing Jerry was still preaching so I could have him say, “Somebody help me!!!!” Finally, with tears running down my face from trying to hold in laughter, Grant wedges him out.
We dash to the restrooms to change into our Rangers gear and drive to Arlington to see the mighty Rangers (ha!) play the Angels. Yes, the Rangers game is my idea of a fun Mother’s Day.
The game is pretty exciting with the Rangers trailing and then catching up, etc. At the end of the 7th inning, we head down out of the nosebleed section to the outfield by the homerun porch. The sky in quickly darkening with a passing storm. The temperature drops, so my 5 year old who doesn’t have a lot of extra flesh, is suddenly FREEZING. She huddles under a blanket I’ve brought along. She clearly isn’t following the game at this point. 9th inning and Rangers up to bat… WALK OFF HOMERUN!!!!! The crowd is going NUTS! EVERYONE is screaming! The atmosphere is electric! Remember, Anna Claire is not really with us as she’s under a blanket. After about a minute into the celebration, she sits up and says, “Did somebody win?” I said, “Yes, the Rangers did.” She replied, “Oh, that is so exciting!” Bless.
We head to the car with our Mother’s Day pink Ranger’s visors and begin to drive home. Anna Claire promptly falls asleep, so when we get to Weatherford to grab some dinner, she wants to know if we’re in Abilene. Sweet Andrew (10 years old) doesn’t chastise her… he just quietly rolls his eyes.
Those are some good memories and some GREAT kids… not to mention a super terrific dad, too!
