Someone should give some lessons on how to leave our presuppositions and traditions in another room when we approach God's book. The closer we come to doing that the more likely we are to be confronted by God and radically changed by His words.

N.T. Wright came here to Roanoke, VA last month, and I can say the same about him as you can about Hays. Incredibly humble, personable and brilliant. Got my copy of The Ressurection of the Son of God autographed. I would like to think that I'm sufficiently self possessed to not want an autograph, but then maybe it's a good that that I'm not.
Would love to have Hays speak here also, and Kreeft. Michael McClymond will be here in October speaking on revival, for those in the area who may be interested. Wow, we really are blessed to have such minds turned to our living God. Glad you're having a great weekend full of learning and growing.

Abandoning dictation and other extreme doctrines of inspiration supported by neo-fundamentalism leads us to approach #5 with more historical questions than those extreme doctrines allowed. That should cause us to reflect further on the developing nature of the witness to God's work (see #6) and, thus, how we might have a place in both the work and the witness. The resulting view of mission departs greatly from that supported by neo-fundamentalism.

When you get around to unpacking, prithee do #5 first. That's the one most severely infested with inside-baseball jargon, and its verb ("presses forward") is the most ambiguous of all of the twelve. Don't get me wrong: I love Hays and greatly benefited from _Moral Vision_. And I'm willing to do the hard work of unpacking #5 myself if necessary. But while you're at it...I'm just sayin'. qb

How is Hays using the modifier, "theological?" Is he referring to exegesis IN LIGHT OF one's understanding of God, or IN SEARCH OF a fuller understanding of God, or both?

That's funny. Your reaction to sitting at dinner with Richard Hays is the same as my reaction was to sitting at dinner with you during ZOE a few years ago.

I'm happy to report that you didn't disappoint either.

Point 6 REALLY resonates with me. I help teach our 5th grade class on Sundays, and we go through a lot of the whole Bible in the year. This point is how I try to convey what we discuss. The stories, the characters, and their testimony about Jehovah. Wonderful!

Wish I could have heard Hays! When you get Wright to come, let me know.

Is there a more unique individual than Randy Harris? Isn't he a wonderful blessing to us all? I can't wait to sit in his class in a couple of weeks at PU.

Your too! :)

I tagged along with John to hear Luke Timothy Johnson a couple of years ago. That was before I became interested in reading and deepening my understanding of scripture. So, I was there but missed out on appreciating what was before me...that's another way of saying I had no idea what he was talking about.

The Hays material sounds fascinating. I will look forward to your unpacking some of those thoughts. Especially #4 and #6.

What I am finding as I read and study now is that the more I learn the less I know but the more I want to find out! And scripture is really more fascinating than I ever dreamed. I think I could spend the rest of my life from the place I am now and still just be at the tip of the iceburg.

And yes...I gave out a big hoot when I read that interview!

Hays was great. It's wonderful that ACU gets to bring in these scholars. It gives lowly psychology professors the chance to ask renowned biblical scholars about apokatastasis and have Mike Cope laugh at you while you're doing it :-)
