March Madness

2007 March 13
by Mike

Florida, UCLA, North Carolina, Texas A&M.

Florida, Texas A&M.

Florida.

I so want to say Texas (too young) or Arkansas (I know, I know, 13 losses). But I won’t. I certainly wouldn’t bet against Coach K.

Your picks?

No way Florida will be there.

My heart says NC will take it but my head won’t let me say it out loud.

None of the #1 seeds will make it to the final four. That’s my only prediction.

  3. March 13, 2007

Final Four: Florida, UCLA, Georgetown, Ohio State

As much as this pains me to say this as a complete University of Michigan fan, I’m picking the Buckeyes (which is still a worthless nut) to win the National Championship, beating Florida in a repeat match-up of the football title.

  4. March 13, 2007

    Florida, Kansas, Georgetown, Ohio State

    Florida, Georgetown

    Florida gets a two peat.

  5. March 13, 2007

This Aggie very much likes your picks, Mike.

    Gig ‘em!!!

  6. March 13, 2007

I have A&M in the Final Four as well; I’d hate to face Acie Law late in a tight game.

I actually have Arkansas into the Sweet 16…with a win over Texas.

Going with my heart always kills me in NCAA pools.

  7. March 13, 2007

Who cares about the NCAA tournament this year? My team (WV Mountaineers) didn’t make it…but they are a number one seed in the NIT!!! So take that NCAA.
I hope Arkansas losses in the first round because our pulpit minister loves them and the silly SEC.

    Go Mountaineers

  8. March 13, 2007

Hey, let’s get those women in here too! I would love to see Pat Summit get another chapionship for the Lady Vols, but Duke with Gail Goestenkors at the helm will be tough to beat.

I am SEC through and through–my Crimson Tide didn’t get in–so will be rooting for all teams SEC and that probably means Florida. Hopefully Arkansas and Kentucky will have a good showing.

    Peace.

  9. March 13, 2007

I hate basketball. A LOT. But every year I fill out a bracket sheet in hopes of beating my husband with my guessing skills!

  10. March 13, 2007

On the men’s side, I am SEC through and through . . . . I should have said.

It pains me, as a UT fan, to say this, but…

    A&M, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Kansas

I think Texas COULD upset UNC in the Sweet Sixteen, but probably won’t. The better news is, 2 Big 12 teams in the Final Four to silence all those ACC and SEC fans out there.

  12. March 13, 2007

Of the elite conferences, the Big 12 is easily the weakest. Sorry. For what it is worth, the only Big 12 team I have in the Sweet 16 is Kansas. Of course, I haven’t been over 50% for about 10 years.
My Final Four: Wisconsin, Pitt, Georgetown, Ohio State. Georgetown over Wisconsin.

  13. March 13, 2007

    Florida can’t win.

If I see Joakim Noah’s ugly mug on one more SportsCenter highlight reel, I’m going Elvis-like on the t.v.!

  14. March 13, 2007

    I’m with you, Beaner!

    I hate basketball. A LOT.

AND I’m delivered from even filling out a bracket. No husband around to force the issue. LOL Fortunately, Mitchell didn’t like basketball anymore than I do. Hurrah! :)

  15. March 13, 2007

What is it with you people? Memphis, 30-3, has not been mentioned once (altho’ Greg did mention Elvis…close)! Only Ohio State has as good a record as the Tigers. Nonetheless, I’m picking Florida to take it all with a win over (who else) Memphis in the final game.

  16. March 13, 2007

There’s a song on the new Norah Jones CD called “Wake Me Up When It’s Over.” It’s my March Madness theme song.

Memphis, Georgetown, Florida, Kansas….and my longshot is Butler. My homer heart say “Come on Hogs” but they’re just lucky to be at the dance. You’re right Mike; Texas is one year away but what talent they have! Better do it now though cause KD is gone….

  19. March 13, 2007

My NC State Wolfpack are relegated to the NIT this year…even though they have a win against a #1 seed (UNC), another win against a #4 seed (UVA), three (!) wins against a #5 seed (Va Tech), and a win over a #6 seed (Duke).

I don’t know for sure, but I bet no other team with six wins against teams seeded 6 or higher was left out of the tournament.

Ok, I’m through whining for now ;-)

  20. March 13, 2007

Ok I forgot one more thing I need to whine about ;-)

After playing four games in four days in the ACC tournament, my Wolfpack has to play again on one day’s rest (if you can call a travel day rest) to play the opening round of the NIT against Drexel (who probably should have been in the NCAA tournament).

Ok now I’m really through whining, I promise!

My eight year old is badgering the rest of the family to fill out brackets. It’s a bit discouraging when a couple of years ago the 4 year old in the family got the most picks right. Should have entered her in some kind of contest….

  22. March 13, 2007

Does no one care that the WORLD CUP of Cricket is going on right now in the West Indies?

I mean, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, India…all the big boys aiming for the World Championship. And America acts like a bunch of collegiate games are the nexus of the universe!

  23. March 13, 2007

Florida (because they will play Winthrop in the 8), Kansas (because UCLA is overrated), Georgetown (because UNC will have just played Texas), and Ohio State (because the South division is soft)

Kansas beats Florida (because they are better) and Ohio State stomps Georgetown (because they are better)

    Kansas wins the National Champ

(P.S. Memphis always chokes…they do not make it past the Sweet 16)

GKB: Um, that’s because they (collegiate games) are.

So glad that the Aggies have a strong presence… I’d love to see them go to the final four…

Haven’t seen anyone calling the Cinderella team yet… My wild prediction, the Corpus Christi Islanders will cut the Cheese :)

  26. March 13, 2007

    Bowling Green and Va. Tech

  27. March 13, 2007

    Alan,
“I don’t know for sure, but I bet no other team with six wins against teams seeded 6 or higher was left out of the tournament.”

Yeah but you lost to my team (WVU) and they are going to the NIT with you. Good luck unless of course you play us! :)

    What is a NIT anyway?

  28. March 13, 2007

It probably won’t happen but I would love to see Ohio State get a rematch with Florida for the National Championship and then exact some revenge for the football thrashing they gave us in January.

Clearing throat, there are 4 (count em), 4 Big 12 Teams in the tourney from the Big 12

    Kansas
    Texas
    Texas A&M
    Texas Tech

I am picking Memphis and Florida in the championship game
    Florida will prevail.

Aggies will fall flat, Texas Tech beat them twice (tee hee)

  30. March 13, 2007

    Kansas, Florida, Georgetown, Texas AM
    Kansas & Georgetown

    Rock Chalk Jayhawks! National Champions!!

  31. March 13, 2007

    Anyone but North Carolina.

Hey, if Florida wins, instead of cutting down the nets, they can cut Noah’s hair!

  32. March 13, 2007

Mike — you’re too humble to note your picks are an uncanny 95% accurate (give or take a percent).

    Florida – Kansas – UNC – A&M
    Florida – UNC
    Florida to repeat.

    Go Ags – go Horns!

  33. March 13, 2007

Cinderellas this year include Old Dominion (Elite 8), So. Illinois (Sweet 16), and, on a lesser scale, Texas Tech (Elite 8).

Oregon, Texas, Kansas, Memphis in the Final 4.

    Kansas-Texas in the Championship.

    UT by 8.

Oh, and the combined points in the final game will be 147.

  34. March 13, 2007

  35. March 13, 2007

    Florida vs. Kansas

    Kansas

    GTown vs. Memphis

    GTown

Kansas over GTown in a classic matchup.

I saw GTown at Madison Square Garden last week in the Big East Tourney–they look like an NBA team. I think they could take Charlotte, Memphis, and the Clippers right now!

But I’m fiercely loyal to KU after having grown up in Wichita. I’ve picked them every since ’95–I’m due!

PS Kevin Durant could be this year’s Carmello Anthony, which would be bad news for KU fans.

  36. March 13, 2007

GKB someone cares, just no one on this side of the ocean. Crickett isn’t real big here in the states, if you hadn’t noticed. Then again I bet Australia could care less who is in our final four.

As for all this March Madness, I’m with Deana EXCEPT when it comes to any Texas teams. IF anyone from Texas, men or women, is in the final four, then I get a little excited.

    Hi Roger,

You’re right, the Wolfpack lost a bunch of games they were not supposed to lose. Their starting point guard was out with injury for about 10 games and they couldn’t even bring the ball up the court.

Anyway (I know none of you really care!) the Pack just beat Drexel. That’s five games in six days, on the road. So they move on to round two of the NIT (“Nobody’s Interested Tournament”). A real test of character!

    Florida, UCLA, Georgetown, Texas A & M

    Florida

Arkansas cannot beat USC. No way, no how.

Wildcard might be my beloved UK Wildcats. Not because of their ability, because we stink. Tubby’s head is non the chopping block unless he does something big. He has lots of motivation.

In the NCAA tournament unless it is a 1 vs. 16, there is no such thing as “no way, no how.”

You gentle souls who have A&M in the Final Four are clearly not long-suffering alumni. If there is one word that most adequately describes us, it is “choke,” as in, “big-game choke,” as in, “no shot.”

If you guys are right, though, qb will stop eating mayonnaise cold-turkey. I promise.

If Memphis can shoot freethrows then they will not be beaten. They are at least ten deep and right now they are getting little in the way of respect which is understandable because of their awful conference, but the last of respect will only fuel their fire. Florida will fall early.

  47. March 14, 2007

Wow. Can’t believe people are still hung up on the hair thing. That issue went out with the 60s/70s. Come to the present, folks.

  48. March 14, 2007
