Save the Cheerleader

Here’s a cultural pop quiz. What is the importance of the following statement?

“Save the Cheerleader, save the world.”

A month ago I wouldn’t have known. But two weeks on your back while your post-surgery knee is resting and rehabbing offers lots of time for catching up on new television shows. It was fun having plenty of time to read — but I can’t read all day long.

So I decided to check out “Heroes” to find out what the buzz is about. And that’s where you find out the key to stopping a massive, destructive explosion: save the cheerleader, save the world.

The premise is that there are people scattered all over who appear to be average, normal folks: a cheerleader in Odessa, a painter in NYC, a cop from LA, a programmer from Tokyo, etc. But they are much, much more than normal. And somehow their lives are coming together to save the world.

I liked the connection to the Jesus story. Scattered all over the world are heroes — seemingly ordinary people who are joining God in putting the world right. They appear to be just hair dressers, teachers, coaches, stay-at-home parents, pharmaceutical reps, doctors, truck drivers, etc. But they are much more. They are people whom God has blessed so that they can be a blessing to others.

Save the hair dresser; save the world. (Oprah yesterday)
Save the administrative assistant; save the world.
Save the mother of three small kids; save the world.
Save the retired great grandpa; save the world.
Save the high school student; save the world.
Save the middle school coach; save the world.
Save the computer technician; save the world.
Save the insurance salesman; save the world.
Save the nurse; save the world.
Save the cheerleader; save the world.
Save the unemployed person; save the world.
Save the . . . .

You also don’t have any “Save the lawyers; save the world” which might be an appropriate one to add. Especially considering the fact that we get no respect and just get all the lawyer jokes.

Oh yeah - Shakespeare wrote for Henry VI “First we kill all the lawyers. . .. All the law students used to wear the T-shirts in law school.

I vote for rehabilitating them and saving them AND the world, myself.

“They are people whom God has blessed, so they can be a blessing to others.” So very true.

We are all ordinary people capable of doing great things by the power of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ…even if that great thing is only giving a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty.

Let us all strive to be like Jesus who went about doing good. We can all make a difference in someone’s life today.

I also came to “Heroes” late and have also really enjoyed it. There is an obvious spiritual back story that they plan on developing, and that excites me.

I got thinking of the Saul who would become Paul. Save our enemy, save the world. Sometimes salvation pops up in the most unlikely places, so we show love and share mercy with everyone we know.

Well I watched Oprah for the first time in my life yeaterday. I was glad to see Pam and all of the attention that she and the Village of Hope recieved. I just kept wishing that Oprah would let Pam and Randy talk more and they didn’t have so many commercials. Save the children, save the world! God be praised!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their respasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV).

I’ve struggled for years to come to terms with the idea that the “ambassadors” were not only the apostles and early evangelists, but each and every Christian. It’s finally breaking in to my mind, after several years of mission work, ministry and then personal darkness…we are heralds of the King.

Great post, I think you’re spot on. Sometimes maybe it’s not so bad to watch a little TV. :-)

My motto was always, “Save the cheerleader… collect the whole set!”

    But I digress. (again)

Mike did you notice that the cheerleader also played in one of your favorite movies. “Remember the Titans” She is the young daughter of coach Youtes.
Kester I hope you are right about a spiritual theme building in the show. I have not seen that but will look for it.

Mike, (or anyone) is there a way to see the Oprah interview (with Pam Cope) online? We were at work and all attempts to tape it were foiled.

I didn’t get to see it either, and am also wishing for an online link to the show. You can see some articles and a video clip about the show on Oprah.com (the link Mike provided) but it isn’t quite the same as seeing the whole thing (though better than nothing).
