Keep Your Eyes Open Today

I wish T. O. didn’t play for the Cowboys. I don’t like listening to him or watching him. Even when he scores three TDs.

- - - -

I still have my program from the 1968 World Series between the Cardinals and the Tigers. I hope there will be a repeat this year.

- - - -

Congrats to the ACU football team. They’re 6-0 for the first time since 1950. Saturday they blew away their rivals from Angelo State in the Homecoming game.

- - - -

Yesterday afternoon we saw the Homecoming musical, “Singing in the Rain.” Since I have all the theater majors in my “Life and Teachings of Jesus” class, it’s fun to watch them as they continue their theater careers. Ryan, Jason, Jessica, Shannon, etc. — wonderful job.

- - - -

Yesterday our “other daughter” (she has her own parents but she became part of our family when she helped take care of Megan and Chris) had her second child, a daughter. She called last night to tell us that they named the little girl Zoe Megan. She liked having the words “life” (zoe) and Megan together. So do we.

God is working to repair this world. He’s doing it in obvious ways; mostly, he’s doing it in ways that don’t catch headlines. The whole mustard seed thing, you know. He’s inviting us to join him in that. In big ways, and small ways. Keep your eyes open today for opportunities.

Mike - What a great, fun weekend in Abilene. Our family was blessed to be at the 8:15 yesterday with lots of other parents/alumni. The question of the day was - did Jack and Jill Maxwell recreate that incredible Jacob wrestling with God piece again for the second service? Wonderful lesson to “accompany” the artists! ;-)

Thanks, I needed that on this rainy Monday morning in Memphis when I had rather stay in bed than be up anyway!

Mike, now c’mon. You speak positively about the poor, homeless, weak, strong, liberals, conservatives, politicians, homosexuals, etc. and yet you can’t find any room in your heart for T.O.? Show the boy some love. I admit he’s selfish and self-centered, but he’s no worse than about 3 or 4 other wide receivers in the league, and yet the media scrutinizes him above all others. I blame them for most of this whole fiasco. I mean, it seems that every time the offense lines up for a play, the T.V. guys circle T.O. with the telestrator (?). Who else do they do that with? They follow him on the sidelines to see who he is talking to, like he’s the only one who has disagreements with his teammates. The pre-game and post-game shows are always about T.O. rather than the game. No one is capable of holding up under that scrutiny, and no one should have to.

    Go Cowboys!!! :)

I think T.O. is going to be a great asset to the cowboys. People just need to give him a chance.

I do think Tony Romo should be the starting quarterback. He is great!
    Two NFL passes and touchdown!!!!

    Go Cowboys!!!!

And how bout’ AHS Eagles this weekend. Go Warbirds!!!!

  7. 7 David U

Brad, good luck with your “T.O. is a poor pitiful victim” campaign.
If it goes well, you should consider selling ice in Alaska.

    Beaner,

A song just jumped into my head when you said that… “We ain’t here to cause no trouble…We just here to do the super bowl shuffle!” You think they might make a remake of that song this year.

  10. 10 Mike

Kent - Yes, they did. That’s almost always what they do when we’re at two services. I love this one — so much that I asked for one of the originals. Now, where I have a wall for a 4′ x 10′ painting — well, I’ll have to figure that out.

  11. 11 cathy

The work from the Maxwells yesterday is truly beautiful. Will the one you did not receive be displayed at the building? Wish some of the ones in storage had a permanent display, too. We really miss the Christ picture in the auditorium.

    Mike,
We missed being at homecoming, especially now that we’re in Harding territory. I feel as if I’m in a foreign land.

And thanks for the reminder of God bringing healing to this land. In ministry, it’s tempting to think big things, but the truth is that I’ve found the greatest joy in ministry over a cup of coffee with a parent or at a bowling alley with a student allowing God to bring healing through a relationship.

Looks like the Tigers get a mini-vacation before the World Series.

  13. 13 Larry James

Mike, last week against the Eagles I watched as TO blocked down field on several plays–laying folks out for the sake of the receiver or running back behind him. During that game and again yesterday, I watched Bledsoe demonstrate his failing ability. Yes, he does talk a wee bit too much, but any receiver as talented as he is who will block downfield can’t be all bad. So, I’ll keep cutting him lots of slack. But of course, I also liked Mark Aquire, Clint Longley and Kenny Rogers! So, consider the source!

I’m with you on the Tigers-Cards series. . .though I wouldn’t hate to see the Mets make it. . .go Tigers!

Missed Sunday at Highland and I so wanted to be there to hear and see the story of Gen. 32’s wrestling match! Like Cathy, I miss the Jesus portrait being displayed. Perhaps one day we’ll have an art gallery devoted to the wonderful illustrations of our GOD stories.

Got to visit with a few ACU exes (and kin) at the first half of ACU’s game–hardly a seat available on the West side–first time in my memory that has happened at an ACU football game in Shotwell Stadium. YEA Wildcats! Left at halftime for Eden, TX to babysit four grandchildren so their parents could celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary with a rare date Saturday night. Many events, memories, blessings for this past weekend.

    Zoe Megan–beautiful!

Yesterday I watched God repair in a wonderful way. We went to the river and watched while over a hundred people were baptized. I watched a family of four; father mother and two children go down in the water and come up all at once. I watched a father and his two adult children immersed at the same time. I watched people stand in line waiting there turn to step into the cold waters of the Guadalupe River. Believe it or not this was not in Africa or even China but in south Texas.

    Zoe Megan–beautiful!

  16. 16 Mike

Cathy - Yes, we’re planning to put the other one up in the auditorium (taking the place of the Nicodemus one).

Clint - Wonderful image. Would loved to have been there.

  17. 17 Randy

I agree with the hope that it will be a repeat of the Cardinals/Tigers World Series of 1968. Even though I was six at the time, I remember it well. It was a thrill Saturday night to be in the stands when Magglio Ordonez hit the game-winning homer against the A’s. The only celebration that I will be a part of that will be greater than the one Saturday night will be when we stand (or leap) around the throne of our King in heaven.

“She called last night to tell us that they named the little girl Zoe Megan. She liked having the words “life” (zoe) and Megan together. So do we.”

I’ve read your blog for years, and nothing has ever made me choke up as much as that statement. Beautiful.

Funny you should mention mustard seeds. I have always heard that mustard plants are difficult to contain. Like dandelions, their seeds often spread to places where they are not desired. I wonder sometimes if God’s word is like that. It gets into inhospitble places where it is not expected to grow and like a dandelion in the sidewalk, it grows and flowers. It’s an invading force that can’t be stopped.

  20. 20 Brad

DU - T.O.’s momma loves him, though. That’s got to count for something.

  21. 21 Jenni

I loved seeing the differences in the painting yesterday vs. the one at Zoe last weekend. Truly amazing.

  22. 22 annie

Jenni, Tell us, who were at Zoe & witnessed THAT “Jacob & God” painting, the differences in the Highland one at yesterday’s service. I LOVED the Zoe version—-lessons from Mike & the Maxwells mural. I MISSED the Zoe experience yesterday at my congregation.

Zoe Megan—a beautiful name. Felt the same as Jon Owen when I read Mike’s words about it.

  23. 23 Steve D

    Brad re: T.O.’s momma -

As an old blues song goes - “Nobody loves me but my Mother, and she may be jiving me too.”

When you are there, you have the blues.

    T. O. can play pitiful all he wants. He chooses to be a part of the media circus. The interesting thing is that by choosing differently, he could earn much more money in endorsements. We all have our “drug of choice” for T. O. it is attention

  24. 24 Brad

Steve D - Maybe I need to go talk to my momma. :(

  25. 25 Allison Brown

    Hey Mike-
I love the prayer you always said when a new baby is welcomed at Highland, but I can’t remember it. Could you post the words to that for me?
Congratulations on the new “adopted” grandbaby, and the other grandbaby on the way.

  26. 26 hooteewho

Congrats on the new grandbaby, what a sweet name and honor to Megan.

Worn out from the Homecoming festivities. Daughter was on the Homecoming Court, we had such a good time.
I am constantly amazed at the creativity of the floats I saw during the parade. Chapel was awesome, and the campus looked fantastic!

TO needs a whupping by his momma!

  27. 27 Kathy

Don’t like O.T. so don’t watch the Cowboys. Simple for me - eszpecially since I’m a Chargers fan, not Cowboys. :)

    - - - -

As mentioned to you yesterday, I’m looking to the Cards to carry the Padres’ honor with them to the World Series win. :)
    - - - -

One day a week, two of the ACU football players, huge guys, deliver the week Meels on Wheels lunches. Love it! :)

    - - - -

Zoe Megan - beautiful and honoring. :)

    - - - -

As you say, all we need do is keep your eyes open today for opportunities and we’ll find we’ve joined God in His work. Praise Him! /o\

    Lovely post, Mike. thanks!! :)

(Selecting a plumbing rat like T. O. for America’s Team is sorta like selecting a murderer to extend the kingdom into the world of the Gentiles. It kills me to say it ‘cuz I don’t like the guy at all.)

Would it hurt him so much, really, to make a touchdown, drop the ball or toss it to the ref, and jog back to the sidelines the way the toothless warriors of the past did it? It’s embarrassing in the extreme. It would appear that class is the Endangered Species of the future, and sooner than I had e’er dreamt.

And I’d block downfield for the Pokes for half of a tenth of what T. O. makes if it would shut him up.

I, too, like the name “Zoe Megan.” Perfect for your lives. Let me ask a question, Mike. Is this the first baby girl named after Megan?

After our little brother, Mark Alan, died, several families named their sons Mark in honor of him. I, too, later on named my younger son Mark Austin, in honor of my little brother. My Mark nearly died after birth, so it was with great reverence that I thanked God for His goodness in giving me a 2nd Mark to fill my life.

I promised God I would dedicate my life to Mark and his life to God as Hannah did in the Old Testament and just one year ago Mark named his little daughter, Hannah, which I thought was most fitting. Her older sister is . . . Zoe. Life. Zoe Elizabeth.

In re: God is working to repair this world. He’s doing it in obvious ways; mostly, he’s doing it in ways that don’t catch headlines. The whole mustard seed thing, you know. He’s inviting us to join him in that. In big ways, and small ways. Keep your eyes open today for opportunities.

Don’t you (y’all) think that blogging is one we spread the mustard seed? I mean . . . is that not true? What do you say, Mike? You are a mustard seed spreader.

As for the Cowboys - any win is a good win, no matter who plays or does what. Our Cowboys flag will be flying high if we can ever get our house built!

Cheers & Blessings today, y’all! Dee

    P. S. I’ve seen a picture of the “original” Jacob’s ladder on a blogsite. How about a picture of the painting, Mike? Can (will) you share that with us?

My Mom & Laura told me about it and I can’t wait to come back to Abilene to see it!

  32. 32 Amy Boone

Mike did a great job of keeping the anonymity of Zoe Megan’s parents and I’m going to now blow that, but as the new proud aunt I’ve got to add that Zoe Megan is as beautiful as her name! I’d post one of the 25 shots I took in the first hour, but I don’t want to take over Mike’s blog! :)

  33. 33 Keith

Go Cards! Please Albert…get outa your slump…Mets are pressing. What a great name-Zoe Megan.

  34. 34 Chris Field

I agree about the TO thing. He drives me crazy.

I would not be opposed to a Cards/Tigers series myself.

  37. 37 Joey

    Mike,
I didn’t take the time earlier to say thank you for a great Zoe conference so I say it now…Thank you!!!

About the world series…Detroit will destroy the Mets in 5, Cards can’t get over backing into playoffs. La russa only thinks he is the best manager.

  38. 38 Mark

Mike and Larry - I’d like to officially welcome you to the Tigers’ fan club. Two series into the post-season isn’t too late to join. Those of us who’ve been here for years are quite gracious toward newbies. But there is a special joy reserved only for those who’ve cheered for the team while while they were losing 502 games in the five previous seasons. Here’s to a Tigers-Cardinals rematch, with the same result: Tiges in 7.

    Hello!

Just wanted to thank you for the wonderfully inspiring sermon about “limping” through life. Because of your sermon, I was able to pass along the analogy to two different people that very afternoon. Thank you for the inspiration. Jack and Jill behind you again blessed us all. I am so thankful for the way the three of you preach to us–visually and verbally.

What a joy to have another precious Megan (Zoe Megan) in your lives. God has a way of “circling” up the precious moments in our lives by placing “intentions” in our hearts! Thankfully, Elizabeth and Greg did just that!

    Blessings to you and yours!!!
