Today we’ll get to go with Matt and Jenna to their church, the Southwest Central Church of Christ in Houston. They were drawn to this church because of its passion for the city — complete with all the messiness that an urban ministry brings. Now, our dear friends Josh and Kayci Ross are here. It’s Josh’s first full-time ministry after graduating from ACU with his M. Div. in May.
It’ll be a great day at Highland with Jerry Taylor preaching. I’ll look forward to returning to the pulpit next Sunday.
May everyone’s spirits be refreshed today.
May God bless and be blessed in this work just outside the “Loop” in Houston. Stella Link corridor has seen its share of evil in the past, may God’s work continue through SW Central.
Jerry is awesome Mike…better hurry home..:)
Ha!
Here’s the thing: Highland is my home, my family. I want it to be nourished by every possible means. So it thrills me to know that when I’m gone the teaching/preaching is done by people like Jerry (and other Highland members like Randy Harris, Jack Reese, Mark Love, John Willis, Steve Weathers, Tim Sensing, Jeff Childers, etc.).
Mike, I’m thinking Josh Ross may be my second cousin—is his dad Rick Ross, whose mom is Mary Jo Lawyer Ross? Mary Jo is my dad’s(Virgil Lawyer) little sister. If you could find out that little bit of info for me, I’d appreciate it! You didn’t know you’d have to hunt down genealogical connections in your blog now, did you? Dad’s family is SO big(8 brothers, 3 sisters), so Lawyers are scattered all over!
Thank you for your help!
Well Mike, we were certainly nourished, sated this morning. When Jerry’s teaching melds with Spirit-driven fervor, who could leave hungry?
We also eagerly await your return, you know.
Hi, Annie! My name is Jenny (Ross) Bizaillion. I am Josh Ross’ sister and yes, Mary Jo is my grandmother!! Great to meet you in blog world!!
this morning! They love being there with Matt and Jenna!
Mike–I am quite jealous you got to hear Josh and see Kayci
Mike,
As you travel from CofC to CofC (I’m assuming, I really have no idea.) how would it strike you if you had to move somewhere were there isn’t really a CofC. More pointedly, why don’t CofCs exist outside of the bible-belt? Oh, they do exist, maybe, but not in the form they take in the bible-belt. In many places they are few and far between and very small, surrounded by much larger, “Big Churches”. As a military guy who has moved around a lot, my Wife and I have found it very hard to find a church to belong to from our heritage CofC. So we end up settling into non CofCs. This is good. We’ve grown and seen God’s revelation much more than we ever thought we would. And it helped to tear down many a wall we had built regarding fellowship with the saved. Our perspective of the CofC and many other “churches” changed. Do you think many beleivers within the bible-belt ever get this experience? What does everbody think? Are our churches still sectarian in nature?
Feel free to leave comments on my blog as well. I’ll try to post something there to start discussion.
