I'm fairly sure that this was not Kent's intent when he talked about movement away from the "head union," but if Christ is head of the body, do we really want to move away from union with the head? Seriously, correction of an extreme always runs the risk of moving to an equally dangerous opposite extreme. As I understand 1 Corinthians, the Holy Spirit does not contradict the Head (Christ). Jesus confronts us with paradox as at times he seems quite noncomformist, while at others quite conservative. As the Father (God) told James, John, and Peter on the Mount of Transfiguration concerning Jesus, "This is my Son, listen to him."

I remember going to Allred one Sunday with some of the Knights. Good memories.

I was at Lipscomb last week with Jeremy. I hadn't been there in 25 years. I couldn't believe how they have grown. Everyone was friendly and very excited about the president and the direction the school is headed. My youngest son, Jeremy, was there making an recruiting visit. Hopefully he will be there playing soccer next year on a pretty good scholarship!

I love Nashville. I would move there in a heartbeat if I could find a job! I wonder if they need school teachers up there?

Mike,
Like Lori said--we were at a retreat with the Granbergs and they talked about your first date. Glad to know it really did happen :) :) Small world isn't it!

At Garnett Church in Tulsa we're going through Gary Holloway's and Earl Lavender's book, Living God's Love. If you like this article, style and direction, you'll love this book by these two men of God.

And, we're just getting warmed up on this unity issue of Wineskins. The way it works is we publish 2-3 articles each week and this issue and dialogue spans Jan-Apr 06.

I remember going with Randy Harris to Brinkley, AR. one Sunday,... he to speak and me for moral support,... to raise money for a campaign to London, while students at Harding. I remember how eloquent Randy was in his delivery and how well recieved we both were by the congregation. He was good then and he's only gotten better with age. Good memories.

You're right! We need to realize that unity is based on a common commitment to Jesus Christ, not on absolute doctrinal agreement.

This journey toward unity is long over due. We have missed much, but will now have much to gain.

Mike,
When I read Gary Holloway's article last week, I just HAD to email my gratitude to him. To me, the ideas expressed in his article on the Spirit and unity is not just a sign of the growth and renewal at Lipscomb, but I am also hopeful that the attitude he expressed will help spur ongoing growth and renewal everywhere--even far away to my home town.

Mike, thanks for the link to the Holloway article....it is REALLY good!

The Granberg's son is here at Harding I think. I remember when I was officiating High School basketball games I had a game with Allred in some tournament, and they came out of the dressing room wearing GREEN! No foolin. Only in Arkansas. :)

Sorry we missed the big event Mike. Thanks for the article link - Mr. Holloway is absolutely on target - I loved this comment:

"My own experience teaching in a university where 70% of the students are from a cappella Churches of Christ confirms this cultural shift away from the importance of denominational labels to a deep concern for relational and spiritual union. It is not unusual in a typical week for our students to attend a Monday night instrumental (!) praise worship at a local Church of Christ, a Tuesday night ecumenical teaching session at First Baptist downtown, Wednesday night church at a fairly traditional Church of Christ, and Thursday night Taize worship at a Presbyterian church - all before going home on the weekend to their parents' Church of Christ where many think we are the only Christians!"

I'll just say that I love that - just love it. Praise God for the generation that is leading us toward the "Spirit union" and away from the "head union" - and are bold enough to not worry about getting their ticket punched or what sign is on the door.

Mike, loved hearing so many of your stories again, and new ones. Thank you again. And "Give Me Jesus" is a great song. Then Taize was wonderful as usual. Too bad lectureship can't come twice a year. Oh! wait---it is!
