Rick - Thanks for that note and link, brother. I read your daughters poignant words of faith. Josh had already invited me to be praying for her and David.

Ron - Yes, I don't mind giving tests! Since there are 100 students, I pretty much have to give objective exams (think: scantron!!). Now, through the semester my students have to write two short papers. That isn't a lot of fun for the prof.

ACU made an great choice by choosing Rick--his preaching has blessed our family for 15 years now--and I am so thankful for his ministry.

"Mere Discipleship" has changed the way I read the New Testament. It's an incredible book.

Mike, I guess at Cascade we are a week later than you all. We have finals in 2 weeks. Seems like the ACU students may be home resting up while we Northwest folks are cramming.

By the way--isn't it nicer to give finals than when we had to take them?

Mike,
Regarding soccer, I'm glad you and your family are enjoying "The Beautiful Game." Our family has been traveling to tournaments for years and we have created many great memories along the way.

Soccer is a cruel mistress--sometimes she crowns you king and at others she turns her back in the most heartbreaking ways. As you know, goals can be few and far between and the team that plays the best many times doesn't win. I have made my peace with it all by accepting come what may and learning to appreciate the site of a striker running on to a perfectly placed defender-splitting through ball (with the linesman's flag remaining down, of course). Whether it results in a goal or not, it's still poetry in motion.

Good luck in your tournament. Tell your son to play hard and play well and all else is gravy.

I learned respect for Rick about 10 years ago while serving as an intern at RHCC, not only for his focus and inspiration, but because he kept beating me at HORSE.

My wife and I are on schedule to complete our nightly readings of TLWW before opening night. Looking forward to it.

My freshman year at ACU was my first year of private Christian school. In Dr Brecheens Bible 101 I learned how different it is to study the Bible as a text book. I called my Mom and said "This isn't like Sunday School anymore!" Dr. Brecheens tests were really hard! I also remember the first time I saw someone cheat on a Bible test. I thought lightening might strike. To cheat is bad, but to cheat in Bible!!!

I sorta miss those days, all but the exams!

In the category of not so eager…

I remember it like it was yesterday. But it was 23 years ago. I was a junior Bible major in a 2:00 class. It was a spring day and the room was warm, my stomach was full from lunch, and I was sitting next to a cool concrete wall – which I happened to lean my head against during class.

About ¾ of the way through class I lost all consciousness and drifted off. My good natured instructor had a wicked sense of humor.

The next class to use the room was a freshman English Comp class. My instructor dismissed my class and had them file out of the room quietly and then bid the English Comp students and their instructor to come into the class quietly. The English instructor is a sweet woman, who also had a great sense of humor.

Once they were seated she began the class and very soon the sound of her voice brought me to the surface. I looked around and discovered that I was now in a class full of freshman – and my instructor was standing beside the window of the classroom door pointing and saying – “I finally got you!”

Needless to say – I never fell asleep in his class again.

Extreme right brained and often had the look of "deer in headlights" or the Bambi look as I like to refer to it.

Thank God for teachers (Mike) who love us not so eager creative ones.

Mike,

I appreciate your blog so much. Today, I am writing as a broken-hearted daddy. You know my duaghter, Jenny and her husbend David. In fact, you dedicated their daughter, Malaya. I am asking you and your readers to go to Jenny's blogsite and leave her a note of encouragement and join me in storming the throneroom today on their behalf. Thanks.

Ufortunately, in my non-art related classed (I'm a Graphic Designer) I was very much a "not so eager student." I guess artist never were good at math anyway. Sigh!

Just finished reading the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Can't wait to see the movie.
