No school today in AISD, in honor of Veteran’s Day, so no one else will be up in this house for quite a while, I’d guess. As an early morning person, I’ve never really had the joy of sleeping in. Oh, but I do know the glory of going to bed early!

All these years later and I still miss “Calvin and Hobbes” in the morning. “Dilbert” has been my favorite for a few years and “Garfield” has survived well through the years. But isn’t there some way we can sue the “Calvin and Hobbes” guy and demand that he bring them back?
Reading the paper first thing in the morning is deeply engrained in my soul. I grew up the grandson of a publisher and then the son of a publisher (Dad) and of an editor (Mom). This means the whole paper. Sports page first, then news, then editorials, then comics, then everything else. This doesn’t take long to do with the Abilene Reporter-News, which generally I think is a pretty decent paper, but I love traveling when there is time to grab a NY Times and go front to back.

Mike - you have to enjoy the comic strip Zits (90% of them anyway) if you have teens in the house.
My favorite comic was ‘The Far Side’. I wish that would come back too!

Have you tried “Get Fuzzy”? I found it a good replacement for Hobbes and Far Side. Took a few reads to get used to, but lots of laugh out loud mornings after that!
I LOVED Calvin and Hobbes and miss it too. Zits is one of our favorites here now - Max usually has me read it. He really relates. And, btw, I love the early mornings. Best time of the day!
I used to be a big fan of Bloom County. I loved the characters in that strip.
Writing Jr/Sr High School sports stories for the Pana New Palladium got me hooked on newspapers. I know of no other newspaper that tells you who towed the vehicle away that was involved in an accident. Jerry’s Wrecker service seemed to have a monopoly on this.
Is the Fort Worth Star Telegram available in Abilene. That is what I grew up on. Who needs the New York Times when you had the Star Telegram?

With some books from the library I have turned my children (7 & 9 yrs.)into Calvin and Hobbes fans, as well (although we have heated disputes about how to pronounce ‘Hobbes’). The 7 yr. old requested a set of them for Christmas. We all relate to Calvin at my house.
Calvin & Hobbes recently made a return to the Dallas Morning News on Sundays. I’m certainly enjoying it.
Know that Kim and I are praying for all the girls and especially the super amazing Sarah & Kayci!

Bloom County was the best. As a junior high kid, I had a pretty good understanding of ’80s politics because of that strip.

As a former school teacher, I can relate to Diane “sleeping in” just a bit–it is such a luxury to not have to hurry in the am every now & then.(Though to go ahead & get up & then just “veg” with my hands around a steaming mug of coffee is one of life’s greatest pleasure,imo!)

I am in fear and terror mode. We have 5 boys in the house ages 1-8 and the 8 year old was reading Calvin and Hobbes books to all of them. I have got to hide those things!

It’s expensive, but probably worth it. There is a luxurious bound set of Calvin & Hobbes that is just now available. It has every single strip ever published and they look great.
Morning people annoy night people like me. Not because we are jealous that they are able to wake up early and we struggle to drag our carcasses out of bed, no matter how long we’ve slept. Morning people annoy night people because morning people are the ones who make the schedules.
I’m teaching a middle school class at the conference titled “I Hope You Dance” with a disco ball (Thanks to Highland) and everything-I am WAY excited!!
I am by far NOT a a morning person-in fact about the time you were writing this-I was crawling into bed…

Try out Foxtrot! I find much education and entertainment from this collection of quirky and sometimes maladjusted childen and their unique ways of relating to each other and the world around them. Not quite Peanuts or Calvin & Hobbes, but at least something beautiful and hilarious until the next genius comic artist comes along.
