I have spent many a morning on the soccer pitch as a player, coach and parent. It never ceases to amaze me how perfectably reasonable and good people can be transformed into screaming maniacs at the sight of 10 year-olds playing the “beautiful game.” It just shouldn’t be.

I think a contributing factor is the segregration of parents along the side line and the demonization of your opponent with the “us v. them” mindset which ensues. I’ve lately formed the habit of striking up a conversation with one or two parents from the opposing team. It’s equally amazing how some pleasant small talk and a few compliments thrown your opponents way can clear the air and make it a much more pleasant experience.

Yeah, there’s still a lot of yelling, but usually our little bipartisan conclave ends up laughing at the fanatics from both our teams and enjoying the game in the process!

I wanted to tell Mike’s blog community that the little boy, Tyler, that had the brain tumor was back at church today just 4 days after having surgery to remove the tumor! We praise God for this, but it floors me when something like what happened to SG’s sister’s preacher happens. What happens to our faith when things DON’T turn out? Can we still praise God? It’s something I struggle with!!!

I’m going to high-jack Mikes Blog to ask for prayers.
My sister goes to UBC (University Baptist Church) here in Waco. Some of you may have heard of it because it is home to the David Crowder Band. This morning in front of a packed Baylor Homecoming crowd, their preacher, Kyle Lake baptized someone, reached for a microphone, and was electrocuted. He died minutes later on the way to the hospital. His wife Jenn was there. His 18 month old twin boys and 5 year old daughter were in the nursery. The church is in shock. The whole town is in shock. Please pray for the Lake family, the UBC family and all who are hurting right now over this horrible accident.

Mike, I had that kind of relationship with the other guys on the mission team in Brasil. Sure, we had our differences at times, but there was a bond and love there that made it wonderful. I don’t have a lot of contact with the guys anymore but I still consider them some of my best friends in the world. I would do anything for any one of them. After coming back to the states I made friends with lots of preachers too. Spending time with those guys is one of the big things I miss by not being in full time ministry anymore. Those were good days!

Mike, I too, have been blessed to have some great friends in ministry. Here in Salt Lake, all my close friends in ministry are not in the church of Christ. (Those guys will not meet with me!) I meet on almost a weekly basis with 10-15 other “pastors” who love the kingdom and me. These men have grown to be some of my closest friends - I have spoken in many of their churches. I hope all ministers would be as blessed with just great relationships with other preachers. Thanks for that reminder.

My wife and I have four children, ranging in age from 23 to 14, who have been or are active in team sports. Their coaches have had a great deal to do with shaping their values and setting their priorities for life–perhaps even more than the ministers and church leaders they have known. I don’t know whether this is a commendation for coaches or an indictment of Christian leaders. Perhaps more Christian leaders should become coaches. What do you think?

Ah, Yes! The simple joys of autumn and winter schedules with two Sunday morning services. Welcome back to our 11AM service, and to nature’s timepiece, the sun.
iow-I really do NOT like getting up in the dark, thanks to DST. Having to get up an hour earlier every day for seven months, and still yet another 45 minutes for early church during the summer is not my idea of gracious living.

I just posted a blog about watching my nephew score his first soccer goal. Here’s an exerpt: I can learn a lot from my nephew. Not being the best is okay, as long as I’m doing my best. Shooting my arms above head in victory is a totally great reaction to meeting a huge goal. Trying new things, especially with supportive friends, can be really fun. Surrounding myself with people who cheer loudly for me is the best. A smart, talented & patient coach is invaluable. It may take until the last minutes of the last game of the season, but if I stick with it, I may even score a goal.
