Slippery, thanks so much for your prayers. Laura is feeling much better and should be dismissed from the hospital tomorrow. She ended up not needing surgery. Thanks again for your prayers, and I am keeping your family in my prayers too.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with the earthquake, but I need to use this blog to solicit prayers again. My roommate Laura was taken in to the hospital today for what the doctors think might be appendix trouble. She had a CT scan tonight, but they won't read it until the morning. If something is wrong with her appendix, they will probably do surgery in the morning. Anyway, please pray for her and her healing. Thank you!

As a survivor of the killer quakes in Mexico City, 9/19,20/1985 - been there, done that, unfortunately, so empathize completely with the survivors of the earthquake in Pakistan/Afghanistan/India. my heart breaks for them. The aftermath emotions are so complex and difficult to describe.

The rest of the world is in better contact with what's going on there than they probably are. All communication is cut off - no phones, nothing can function after a killer quake of this magnitude. You end up feeling as though the rest of the world ceased to exist and you're sitting in the middle of rubble, wondering who else of your loved ones are gone. There's disorientation, including that caused by landmarks imploded out of existence by the quakes. Food, water, medical assistance, jobs, all the pieces that hold daily lives together are gone.

It will be years before the emotional trauma heals. So please, pray for their emotional and spiritual health, as well as for the recovery of more survivors trapped below the rubble.

The memory of that morning in 1985 still causes nerves to tremble and panic set in. There simply is NO way to explain the total effect of such a tragedy on those that survive.

Mike,

I know that Thodicy is a touchy subject but with all the natural disasters that have happened this past year it is a subject that must be discussed. The world is wondering if these tragedies have meaning and they are looking for answers from the religious community. What do we have to offer a hurting world? Do we have any answers to the question of why?

When someone we love suffers then we suffer. One way to suffer with those who suffer is to love them; the way to love others is to spend time with them. The hard part is learning what true love is. We may not be able to spend time with people half way around the world but there are plenty of people in our community whose world has been rocked. By loving our neighbor the world will know love. We could all learn from Henri Nouwen.

Mike,
Lately I find myself praying that I would suffer a little more. Not that I would experience a natural disaster but that I would care more for those that have. I agree with you that it is hard to watch and so, sadly, I often don't. I want God to have the pain of those who have fallen into the earth to fall into my heart. I want to suffer with those who suffer. It is so easy to change the channel. I know that we all have our own trials but it just seems like we are spared.
