What wonderful memories of my first few years in Mexico you are bringing to the surface, Mike. :o)

One in that comes to mind was hearing a friend telling his mom that everyone deserves a little "pollo" [chicken],but in actuallity was saying everyone deserves a bit of "apoyo" [help, assistance].

My Spanish speaking husband could never get kitchen and chicken straightened out when conversing in English.

And I once told a lovely hostess how much I enjoyed her dinner, that it was so "sobrina" and was privately and gently reminded that a dinner is not 'niece,' rather it is delicious [sabrosa]. lol.

Learning the richness of the Spanish language was one of my life's greatest adventures - truly "sobrina" ;). LOL

Cuidate mucho y regrese con la cabeza llena del bello idioma que es el espan~ol. (I can't seem to find how to place the ~ correctly on this keyboard. Oh well! :o)

Mike, my wife and I enjoy your blog but never made a comment until hearing your CR stories. So funny and familiar. Living in West Africa for the past 6 years, I CONTINUE making blunders in the language. My first prayer in the Aja language (a tonal language) cracked up the entire congregation when I was thanking God "that through the CAR of Jesus, we can enter the BELLY BUTTON of heaven." You might guess that CAR and BLOOD sound almost the same; as do BELLY BUTTON and GATE. I also remember feeling very self-conscious around some new friends one day hearing them talking about what I thought was "the WHITE MAN's HOUSE" (I was sure I was the object of ridicule). Turns out that WHITE MAN'S HOUSE and TOMATO sound alot alike. Hang in there and keep the stories coming!

Lo siento. She sneaks me meanings of WORDS, not WORLDS. No insight yet about Mars, Alpha Centauri, or Tatooine.

I am glad that you are finding blessings during your stay in Costa Rica! It's always great to have a buddy in a language class, especially when you can compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses so well. Fresh fruit is amazing...I'm so ready for the Brazilian fresh fruit next month! And there is absolutely nothing like praying in another language, even if you do end up stumbling all over yourself or taking ten minutes to pray two sentences. I think that was my favorite part of the Portuguese class I took with Team Salvador last year.

On another note, I have to say publicly that I think your wife is amazing. I was hanging out with her at church last night and was so touched by watching her interact with Jennifer Bourland and the Childers family. It is really neat to see the special relationships and bonds that have formed as a result of this deep tragedy. My prayers are still with you all!

"who sneaks me meanings of worlds." This is incredible! Would you ask her about about Alpha Centauri - some believe that it may have terrestrial life conditions.

I am glad you have made a friend.

Mike,
My dad said that Chris did wonderfully at Impact. I am really glad that he got to experience inner-city Houston and that you and Diane trusted enough to let him go, even for a few days. I can only imagine Diane's relief as the van pulled into Highland's parking lot and Chris was in one piece! Our God is faithful! Be sure and ask him his favorite part of the trip, Kirk Mann said that his favorite thing was a huge game room and arcade they got to visit. I'm sure that was a big highlight for most of the guys. Love you and miss you already. Blessings in Central America!
