Sometimes I earn brownie points on Friday morning by making a couple stops after working out. This morning I rolled through Starbucks for a Cafe Mocha for Diane. (The only thing Starbucks sells that I like is bottled water. Apologies to you SB addicts. I have my own addictions, but coffee isn’t one of them.) Then I ran into Grandy’s for a biscuit deluxe for Chris.
The guy behind me in line must have been pushing hard on 90. I heard his order as I was leaving: “I’d like two sweet rolls and a whole milk.”
You’ve got to love that! There’s hope ahead. At some point you think, “Who cares what I shovel in there? Bring on the extra piece of blueberry pie. And drop an extra scoop of Bluebell on top.”
Meanwhile, I came home to my Fiber One with almonds with some 1% milk.
What I like is that dark chocolate is now an anti-oxidant! I knew I was doing the right thing all these years, and that proved it.
I can’t believe you drink 1% Milk! How fattening! Skim is the way to go. I love to drink a big glass of skim milk with my Extra Cheese Pizza from Papa Johns.
I am not much of a milk drinker, but when I do drink it, it has to be 2%. That is what I drank growing up, so that is what I drink now.
As far as breakfast goes, I hardly ever eat it, and when I do, it’s things like Reses Puff Cereal, or Ritz crackers… things like that. Even when I do have time to eat something more, I dont like most of the breakfast foods out there. However, I do like Pancakes, Waffles, Bagles..
I need to eat more healthy things.
Diane has good taste. Cafe Mocha is my favoite Starbucks indulgence.
As for breakfast, nothing beats frosted grape Pop-Tarts (it’s good to have fruit in the morning, and I prefer mine in a thin layer between frosted pastry).
Jeff
so this morning I stopped at Starbucks on the way in and called the office to take orders. I made it in the office door with them until I got loosy goosy and dropped an entire grande toffe latte on the floor.
Note to Starbucks lovers, toffee lotte on the carpet makes for a nice fragrant potpourri that permeates the entire office.
Okay, Mike. This is one point where you need some help. You must know, as I discovered, that Fiber One is pelletized cardboard.
Try the cereals made by Optimum. (Can’t believe I’m talking seriously about this kind of thing. Has it come to this?)
Got the name wrong. Cereal make is “Nature’s Path.” Optimum is one of the models.
Is Optimum the model who doesn’t have implants?
And is no one going to point out that “Man does not live by bread alone”? That’s why God made coffee. Or grape juice. I forget which.
At least you live w/in an hour of Starbucks, although I guess it’s good I’m in podunk since I can no longer do my White Mochas… sigh. Now it’s a Carnation Instant Breakfast {You’re gonna love it in an instant ~ can’t have the first part w/ out the last} (w/ Sweet Acidolphus milk or however you spell that word), a low fat bagel and low fat cream cheese, or oatmeal, or if I’m really hungry ~ Honey Nut Cheerios. Now those are some stick to your ribs morning meals!
Optimum? Says on the box she’s “All Natural”
Frank - You’re peeking in our closet, aren’t you? I actually sprinkle Fiber One on top of Optimum Power.
I’m still just trying to understand the whole “not being addicted to coffee” thing.
I’ve made a lot of healthy eating changes in my life recently, but coffee, especially fine, overpriced, $3.00 coffee has always had an irresistible allure to me.
My wife doesn’t care for coffee, either. She does like the Caramel Machiattos, but that’s about it. If we go to Starbucks, she usually goes with the bottled water as well, or a hot chocolate. I don’t understand… I just don’t understand!!!!!
So, what is it with you non-coffee drinkers? It’s just plain weird.
*lol*
Brian
I’m also a non-coffee drinker, as is my wife. (That makes it a lot simpler, by the way) I just never acquired a taste for the nasty stuff. My dog won’t drink it, and I think he has good taste. Oh, wait, I’ve seen some of the things my dog will eat, and then eat again, so scratch that last remark. Anyway, how did you ever get to where you could drink it? That’s what I want to know.
The only exception to this rule is the Cuban coffee they serve in the paneras in Hialeah, Florida, but that stuff is more syrup than coffee, and is served in those little paper pill cups, which you slam back while standing at the coffee bar. I did enjoy that stuff….
Have all of you seen the latest National Geographic? It has a cover story about coffee. I know what you are thinking. NO! I wasn’t looking for an article about the peoples of the Amazon or natives of Africa.
In the voice of Jimmy Allen: “Judge not, that ye be not judged”. Or in the voice of Craig Jones doing Jimmy Allen, which is even better!

OK. You all have left me no choice but to post a newspaper column I wrote about coffee last April. Click on my blog and read all about it.
Don,
I can tell you how I got started with my coffee addiction.
Right after I graduated from college, I had a job that required me to start at 5:30 a.m. It was very difficult to be ready to work that early, so I started going to a local donut shop and getting a large cup of black coffee on the way to work. For the first two weeks I choked it down, hating every drop of it. But after that, I began to look forward to it. That was 17 years ago. Now, I am a certified junkie — drinking 5-7 cups a day.
Jeff
Jeff, 5-7 cups a day?! Wow.
I’m going to be up your way in a few weeks. I’ll stop by and buy you a cup (or lunch). Let me know when the snow melts, and I’ll be there. (Do you get the lake effect snow, or is that farther east?)
You guys have all missed THE point of Mike’s blog today–He went and did something wonderful for his wife and son! On an ordinary day! Winter hats off to you,Mike!
I have been doing really good, just eating fresh fruit in the mornings. An apple everyday this week and it has surprisingly kept me till lunch. Well….Joel and I went to Austin and got in really late last night so, when I realized this morning I was out of apples it was too late to go to the store before work. So, I was compelled to eat the next best thing! A brownie I refused to eat from our luncheon catered by Jason’s Deli yesterday(because of trying to eat healthy) heated up with a scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream on top. Yeah..okay! I felt just like Will Farrell in Anchor Man when he jumped into that bear pit and said “I immediately regret this!” and so I have ALL DAY!!!! I hope I never eat that again. I am going to the store and stocking up on apples! I hope you have a blessed weekend living in the presence of the Lord.
Kim Q.
So, with Mike’s “longest sermon ever” (Brenda Chrane’s quote, not mine) coming up this Sunday … will there be enough coffee available in the fellowship hall to make Brother Porche’s day?
You get points for anything with almonds, but you loose them again for your blaspheme against Starbucks. Man, way to keep an even keel — +1, -1.
I don’t understand. Must be something about your generation. Curt and Nedra Sparks are kinda the same way. They obviously don’t understand that going to Coldstone Creamery and looking for sugar free or low fat “ice cream” just defeats the point. You don’t eat ice cream because it’s good for your physique; you eat ice cream because it’s good for your spirit! Jesus would have taken the disciples to Coldstone (or in lieu of that, Marble Slab)once in a while for some kosher double dutch decadence in a cone. I have it on good authority: mine.
When Jen was young, I would drive her to a dairy North of Lubbock on Saturday mornings. We would get a gallon of “raw milk” (that means that it was still inside of the cow a few hours earlier–maybe 8% fat or so–quick chilled–no time wasted on homogenization) and a cookie.
She loves the Lord and turned out ok. We had fun mornings for $2.05.
