One year we made a big tunnel on the dead end and brought out TONS of food coloring. We made our own art museum and made my mom, unsuspecting come out to see it. She had a white coat on. It was practically a rainbow by the time she finished shimmying out of the kid sized overcolored tunnel. But the colors were soo cool. If youve ever been in the Detroit aiport “whale tunnels” I always say we designed those at the ate of 8. Thats what they looked like. Only a lot smaller, without whale sounds, and a lot messier.

I too used to live on the dead end that was the elementary school. One winter, we got nearly 30 inches at one time with banks of snow covering up our doorway. The school yard had a wonderfully steep hill. My grandparents were visiting and Granny just had to get on our sled and ride it down to the bottom. She was a kid all over again! I took pictures.

In fact, for me the summer could be about 2-1/2 hours long and I’d be very happy indeed, especially when you talk about Abilene’s summertime. What is it, about 10 months long, with half that time over 100 degrees? At least it seems that way to me.

I went out this afternoon and absolutely, sinfully revelled in the cool, moist, white weather. What a joy!! Our 17 year-old exchange student, from northern Russia, wanted to pick a snowball fight with me, but chose the two visiting grandkids instead. (sob, sob)

My poor little ol’ southern California Nissan doesn’t know what to think. First she was iced on this weekend and today she was blanketed with that cold, white stuff. But she got back at me for bringing her here, hanging her own snowball fight on me. While driving down Mockingbird, she threw a snowball at me - a fast ball from the hood of the car right over home plate, which in this case was my front windshield. [there's no place to garage her at the house, so you can imagine the snow accumulation on the hood]

Btw - today was my very first time to drive in snow. How about that!! Six plus decades on this earth and God is still gifting me with new experiences and surprises. LOL

I echo the tunneling adventures in snow. I lived on a Dead End in elementary school that had a big brick wall holding back a big dune hill. The snow plow would just plow everything against the wall for us every day. It was a blast to make forts all day long. But it was sad every morning to see it crushed to smitherenes (spelling?) by the plow. Then again it meant a new adventure awaited! The best were the backyard mazes you could make when it hit about 2-3 feet. So fun! I miss REAL snowdays.. Blizzards rule.

If you really like the fluffy white stuff you need to move north of the border. I shovelled my drive way twice two days ago, and yesterday I still had a lot of other shovelling to do around the house and the church here. Luckily it was very light.

Temperature wise, it is -1 or 2 (on your scale - 20 by mine)

Like Julie, I will miss being at services tonight — especially since I am seldom in Abilene on Wed nights.

This weekend, we’re going back to Missouri, where they are getting dumped on at this very moment. My boys and I are excited. I’ll stay out of the snow tunnels, though.

I’m afraid that it won’t be quite so white on Christmas day in Fort Worth (where we’ll be celebrating), but I’ll take what I can get today!
