I've been reluctant to post my list - my reason for viewing a movie [the few times a year I do] is to be totally transported out of my day-to-day life by the craft of acting in and of itself, which to me, makes the story told believable. Rarely have I felt a deep moral story being shown since a high percentage of movies are neatly tied up, one way or another, to finish the tale being presented. Movies are rarely a life-impacting event for me. But here goes anyway and in no particular order of preference. Each is special to me on its own.

1-Prince of Players - probably the first US movie made by Richard Burton. An unusal presentation of John Wilkes Booth's brother - a Shakespearian actor.

2-A Song To Remember - The music of Chopin did it for me.

3-Ammadeus - This time it was the music of Mozart that did it.

4-Cyrano - Jose Ferrer IS Cyrano.

5-A Beautiful Mind - Beautiful! The transition from first half to second stunned me and completely surprised me.

6-Bambi - One of my first Disney movies. I was entranced and heartbroken.

7-LOTR (I count the trilogy as one)- Too much to narrow down to one comment.

8-Sleepless in Seattle - Single parents' tales really get to me.

9-Blazing Saddles - I split my sides laughing every time I see it. Genius!!

10-The Passion - No comment required.

There are others I've enjoyed, but this is the list of those that I've enjoyed seeing more than once.

I can't believe I didn't see "Blazing Saddles" or "This Is Spinal Tap" anywhere up there. Come on...you know you wanna!

Here are mine, in no particular order:

--The Philadelphia Story ("I promise to be yar this time")
--It's a Wonderful Life ("Here's to George Bailey-- the richest man in town")
--Sixteen Candles
--Princess Bride
--Steel Magnolias
--O Brother, Where Art Thou
--Just about anything with Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, or Cary Grant
and, of course:
--Blazing Saddles ("You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.")
--Spinal Tap ("Well...these go up to eleven")

P.S. Q: after reading your list, I think we might have been separated at birth, movie-taste wise.

Based on your list of movies I am listing films you might like but may or may not have seen. I will follow up that list with my favorites:

10.Cats Don't Dance -kind of an obscure film, but a whole lotta fun. doesn't try to be the next big budget thing. i like it. a fun animated film.

9.An American Tail -not an obscure film, but one that gets passed over for Disney stuff. I think it is one of the best animated films ever made.

8.Without Limits -the story of Prefontaine...often overlooked and an excellent film.

7.My Left Foot -not at all obscure (might have won Best Pic) and yet i am amazed at how few people seem to have seen it. excellent film.

6.Magnolia -biggest risk on here. it isn't about a preacher and it is a whole lot more raw than the apostle. that said, it is one of the most redemptive films i have ever seen. nice to see God get involved with such a group of losers.

5.Garden State -most recent film to make the list (you can still see it in theatres). maybe this guy is to me what billy is for you. where we each might be without Christ. great story of discovery.

4.I have no Fellowship equivalent, which says something about those films. if i were in the mood to watch fellowship, i can't imagine popping anything else in.

3.Bronx Tale -the other side of the mob. and a great DeNiro flick

2.Goodfellas -not an obscure film at all, but if the Godfather made it cool to be in the mob, this acts as a corrective. neither bronx tale or goodfellas come close to the brilliance of the godfather films

1.nothing touches the princess bride either. what a great flick. however, i did find that pirates of the carribean captured some of that same fun and adventure. a poor man's princess bride, to be sure, but that's still saying something.

My list:
10.O Brother, Where Art Thou? -the music had a lot to do with it. the story was incredible. the characters were hilarious. i love the coen bros almost anytime, but the outdid themselves with this one.

9.The Princess Bride -one of the most quotable films ever, every character is great, and all ages can enjoy it. i have never met someone who didn't like this film.

8.Planes, Trains, and Automobiles -this film has heart in a way that few others do. it has humanity. not what you'd necessarily expect from guys who did stripes (john candy) and the jerk (steve martin). funny and warm and sad and true.

7.Cool Hand Luke -he just keeps getting up. it's awesome and inspiring and tragic. prison films hold a special place in my heart, and this is one of the best.

6.The Shawshank Redemption -speaking of prison films...hope is a dangerous thing indeed. what a great story. well acted, well done.

5.High Fidelity -i see myself in this movie's main character in the best and worst ways. any ways in which i escape his faults are through knowing Christ.

4.The Godfather -what can i say...very quotable, excellent story, characters, acting, writing, everything.

3.Magnolia -what a harsh film. not for the faint hearted or easily offended. still, if you want to see some of the world's worst come face to face with grace, this is the film for you. after the first hour i thought "why am i watching this?" and i ended up loving it.

2.The Natural -the music, the story, the characters again. anything that gets me loving baseball must be a great work. and it is. by the way, if you're looking for a depressing "what could have been" read the book.

1.Dead Man Walking -never seen the scandal of grace so well captured on film. an incredible true story. say what you want about robbins' anti-death penalty agenda (maybe i don't mind it because i support it...his agenda, i mean) the story is about how grace isn't easy on anybody. it's fantastic.

How about doing the same type of blog using favorite books as a theme. It may have already been done and I missed it.

What about Rocky I?

Out of 33 comments, there was no "Schindler's List"

The little red coat, the survivors coming over the hill to the graveside, "So my factory is a HAVEN". "I didn't do enough."

Whoa, I could turn into a fountain again thinking about it.

In mostly random order:

-Shawshank Redemption
-Braveheart
-Pride and Prejudice (repr. of al good Jane Austen movies)
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (speaks for itself)
-Zoolander (there has to be some truly stupid movie in this list)
-What About Bob? (repr. of Murray's best stuff)
-LOTR
-Rabbitproof Fence
-Life is Beautiful

But #1 is and has always been...

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

What! Have none of you seen Silverado?!? A good-guy wins all (Kevin Kline) that has some of the best humor a western can claim!! Not to mention Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Brian Deheney, and Scott Glenn. Try to find "Wilson" the neighbor with his face showing for extra fun. Please, give it a view!!

(Other great Kevin Kline movies: Life as a House, The Big Chill, Dave and the Emperor's Club) Sigh....

O.K. worst first---The Thin Red Line (most boring movie ever made.

No one mentioned Six Days and Seven Nights!
Or any other Harrison Ford Action Flicks. The Indiana Jones series were all good, as well as his Jack Ryan movies.

But I like many others LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Princess Bride. Most quoted movie ever at our house.

I'm with you, Greg, on "About a Boy." Surprisingly smart comedy!

I'm also with Matt on any Coen Bros. flick. Just as long as he didn't intend to say the Farrely Brothers. Those guys are wacked out...

My top movie of all time was a rough one to watch:
American History X, starring Ed Norton. It is a poignant film about an ex-skinhead leader who befriends a black man in prison and returns home upon release to try to change the minds of his family and friends back home. This one is rough, guys...but such an amazing portrayal of the evils of racism, the opportunity everyone has for change, and the consequences we all must face for past sins. I'd recommend this movie with discretion.
