My second year of Spanish at ACU begins this morning; my freshman Bible class begins this afternoon. I’m looking forward to both.
The Olympics need to end so I can get a life back. Chris and I have found ourselves watching swimming, gymnastics, trampoline, beach volleyball, and almost anything else on. Why do we watch things we wouldn’t watch at any other time for four years? Because it’s the Olympics!! And now the GOOD STUFF (for me) begins. Did you see the women’s marathon? Nothing quite like going 26.2 miles in 100 degrees!
Matt’s former teammate at Abilene High, Jonathon Johnson, runs the 800 this week.
It brought tears to my eyes when Deena Kastor crossed the finish line to win the Bronze medal in the women’s marathon. Her friends and family were cheering her on in the stands, and Deena herself was crying her eyes out as she ran the last 400 yards. It is my favorite Olympic moment so far. She is only the second American woman to ever medal in the Olympic marathon.

All good Red Raiders will be cheering JJ on Wednesday and (hopefully) Thursday. Of course, we’re already proud of him for getting this far. Wouldn’t it be cool to bring back a gold medal? Talk about being BMOC!
Was anyone else flabbergasted that trampoline jumping is an actual Olympic sport? Brandon and I kept waiting for the Aflac duck to make an appearance or another crazy commercial to end ~ we were watching with utter confusion on that. Come on ~ TRAMPOLINE??!!! We watched, probably looking like a cat wathcing a tennis match the enitre time… up, down, up, down, up, down…
Yes, Mae, I too watched in utter disbelief that trampoline jumping is an Olympic sport….to think, if I’d only jumped harder in 5th grade….

Wow, Gang, did everyone understand that I am BEGINNING my second year of Spanish? So far I’m at a “See Jane run — run, Jane, run” level. (This will only communicate with people over 40, I think.)
Actually, I can read a lot. And I can write a lot. But when someone actually speaks to me, I look like a Spanish deer in the headlights.
Well, then, Mike, you should find my phrase particularly useful, since it comes directly from that lone bastion of culture that is VeggieTales — which being translated is, “Like butter on a bald monkey.”

I would have watched the women’s marathon, but I went to church like a good little Christian boy. It’s kind of nice to know I would have finished 56th in the women’s race based on my marathon PR, though…
I’m determined to find a way to catch the men’s marathon this Sunday, though, either live or taped.
Distance running…nothing quite like it.
